The Mountain Partnership is a United Nations voluntary alliance working together for mountain peoples

The Mountain Partnership addresses the challenges facing mountain regions by tapping the wealth and diversity of resources, knowledge, information and expertise, from and between its members, in order to stimulate concrete initiatives at all levels that will ensure improved quality of life and environments in the world’s mountain regions.

Do you work with mountain communities in Kyrgyzstan? There's less than one week left to apply for the Business Incubator and Accelerator (BIA) for Mountains Programme! 🇰🇬

🏔️ BIA supports mountain producer organizations, cooperatives, youth- and women-led initiatives, artisan groups and NGOs working with medicinal plants, dairy, beekeeping, natural fibres and agritourism.

🌱 Selected applicants receive tailored business incubation support, followed by grants of USD 15 000 to 50 000 and acceleration services.

📣C*D COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia is approaching!

On 26 October, the Government of Armenia, the UN Environment Programme the C*D Secretariat, the Mountain Partnership of the United Nations and other partners will come together for Mountain Ecosystems Day, putting mountain biodiversity in the spotlight🌱

🏔️ Mountain biodiversity is key to life on Earth.

Mountains are home to 25 of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots and 30 percent of all Key Biodiversity Areas, while also harbouring important crop, livestock and genetic diversity.

Yet mountain ecosystems face growing pressures from climate change, land degradation and biodiversity loss🍃🐂.

Bringing together mountain countries, international and regional organizations, scientists, Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists, youth and local communities, the Day will explore the state of mountain biodiversity, financing for mountain biodiversity, community knowledge and stewardship, and regional approaches to advancing implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in mountain regions.

The Day will also look ahead to the Yerevan Platform, the Second Global Mountain Summit Bishkek+25 and continued action for mountain biodiversity.

🌄Protecting mountain biodiversity means protecting the species, genetic resources, food systems and livelihoods that depend on it.

This , the Mountain Partnership celebrates the role different fibres can play in connecting tradition with new opportunities. 🧵 🏔️

🇰🇬 In Kyrgyzstan, women artisans from the Topchu group worked with designer Stella Jean under the Fashion for Fragile Ecosystems Initiative, to bring traditional Kyrgyz felt designs into contemporary clothing.

🧶The artisans adapted felt decorations inspired by the traditional Shyrdak technique and applied them to cotton, creating garments that combined centuries-old craftsmanship with everyday wear.

🤝 The collaboration helped bring their skills to a wider international audience, creating opportunities for the women to reproduce and sell the garments themselves.

🌍 Behind every fibre are people, skills and traditions - and thoughtful partnerships can help keep those traditions alive while improving livelihoods and protecting fragile ecosystems in mountain regions.

⛰️ Thank you to the Mountain Partnership members, speakers and colleagues who joined yesterday’s event on mountain forest solutions at and in Rome.

The discussion highlighted a clear message: solutions for mountain forests already exist – now is the time to turn growing global attention into investment and action on the ground.

A few key takeaways:

🌊 Healthy mountains protect communities upstream and downstream. Investing in resilient mountain forests also means investing in water and food security, rural livelihoods, hydropower and disaster-risk reduction for all.

🌿 Indigenous Peoples’ leadership is crucial. Protecting mountain ecosystems means partnering with Indigenous Peoples as equal rights-holders and co-creators of policy, building on their leadership, governance and traditional knowledge.

🤝 Stronger partnerships can build more resilient supply chains. The discussion highlighted the value of moving beyond transactional supply chains and co-investing in mountain producers and high-quality, low-impact mountain products.

🌱 Young people need more opportunities to lead and work in mountain regions. Speakers highlighted the importance of youth employment, paid entry pathways, skills development and investment in youth-led solutions.

Looking ahead, *DCOP17, COP31 and the Bishkek+25 Global Mountain Summit in 2027 offer important opportunities to carry these messages forward and keep mountains high on the global agenda.

In many Carpathian communities, pastoralism plays an important role.🐄

Mountain pastoralists raise livestock and produce food, fibre and other goods in mountain areas. Drawing on generations of traditional and local knowledge, they sustainably manage rangelands, support animal welfare and contribute to food security. 🥛🍎

As a member of the Mountain Partnership, the Carpathian Convention also highlights the importance of regional cooperation in:
🌲 protecting mountain ecosystems,
👩‍🌾 supporting mountain communities
🌍️ and advancing sustainable development across borders.

Building on the momentum of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, The Mountain Partnership celebrates the many pastoral traditions and practices in the Carpathians & beyond.

🏔️ Программа BIA оказывает поддержку организациям горных производителей, кооперативам, инициативам под руководством молодежи и женщин, ремесленным объединениям и неправительственным организациям, работающим в таких производственно-сбытовых цепочках, как лекарственные растения, молочная продукция, пчеловодство, натуральные волокна и агротуризм.

Отобранные участники получат индивидуально разработанную поддержку в рамках бизнес-инкубации, а затем гранты в размере от 15 000 до 50 000 долларов США, а также услуги по ускоренному развитию бизнеса. 🌱
