Mountain regions are increasingly affected by land degradation and desertification.

As UNCCD COP17 🌍 begins today in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the impacts of land degradation on mountain ecosystems, water resources and livelihoods deserve greater attention.

Drought, deforestation, overgrazing and unsustainable land use are driving land degradation in mountain areas, with growing impacts on ecosystems, water resources and livelihoods. 🌾

Around 311 million people, approximately half of the rural mountain population in developing countries, live in areas exposed to progressive land degradation. Of these, 178 million are vulnerable to food insecurity.

🌱 Restoring land in mountain regions is essential for protecting ecosystems, strengthening livelihoods and improving food security.

Across the world’s mountain regions, young people are bringing fresh ideas, skills and energy to the challenges facing their communities.

They are building livelihoods, protecting local ecosystems, carrying knowledge forward and finding new ways to make mountain communities more resilient.

🏔️🌎️ Mountain professionals from 17 countries came together in the Italian Alps for , exploring the vital role of mountain rangelands and pastoralist communities in building climate resilience, conserving biodiversity and sustaining livelihoods.

📒 Over 11 days of immersive learning, field visits and knowledge exchange, participants deepened their understanding of pastoral systems, climate adaptation, sustainable land management and the importance of local knowledge in protecting mountain ecosystems.

🐐 Dedicated to , IPROMO2026 strengthened global collaboration in support of pastoralist livelihoods and sustainable mountain landscapes.

📝IPROMO 2026 begins today in Ormea, Italy!

🐑 🧑‍🌾 🐐 As a contribution to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralism, the summer school will provide participants with an understanding of sustainable mountain development with a focus on the ecological, social, economic and governance dimensions of mountain pastoral systems, while integrating scientific and traditional knowledge through policy discussions and field‑based learning!
