The role of human rights defenders (HRD) is very important when talking about protecting and promoting human rights. For the past few years, discussions on the safety of HRD have been increasing. This is in line with recent global reports that show a worrying situation; for example, several attempts have been reported involving criminalization of civil society elements such as journalists, scholars, environmental defenders and indigenous people. More and more people are hesitant to participate due to the constant repressions of citizen control.
One of the latest forms of attack is what we call 'Judicial Harassment'. The term refers to any use of legal or judicial procedures to prevent people from exercising their constitutional rights. In Indonesia, we have names like Harris Azhar and Fatia Maulidiyanti who are currently facing penal charges for revealing a scandalous business practice that involves a big political name. Previously, two Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researchers were reported to the police after publishing their research on possible corruption involving a figure in power. Not only in Indonesia, similar situations occurred in the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, the Philippines and many other countries, initiated by either state or business actors.
To discuss possible recommendations, we call you to join our third webinar on June 21st, 2022 at 2-4 PM Jakarta Time (UTC +7) entitled "Put an End to All Judicial Harassments".
