CASTRO (Contemporary Art STudios ROme) è uno spazio di formazione alternativa che nasce per sostenere artisti, curatori e ricercatori italiani e stranieri in diverse fasi della loro carriera, e che promuove un modello di apprendimento sperimentale, versatile e altamente collaborativo. La programmazione di CASTRO è articolata su due binari paralleli, legati dall’esplorazione di un tema comune, che
varia di anno in anno. Il primo binario è quello dedicato al pubblico e prevede la programmazione di Artist Talks, Curator’s Round Tables, Project presentations, Cineforum. Il secondo è dedicato agli artisti in residenza e prevede Incontri Tutorials individuali in studio, Studio Visits individuali, Open studio days durante i quali gli spazi sono aperti al pubblico, Escursioni, Workshop a numero chiuso con artigiani locali, Blog online ospitato dal sito di CASTRO a uso dei residenti. L’attività centrale di CASTRO sono i CRITS, incontri della durata di un’intera giornata in cui una serie di artisti, sia residenti sia artisti esterni, presentano i loro lavori, finiti o in-progress, davanti a un pubblico di persone alle quali sarà richiesto di commentare e criticare i lavori. CASTRO è gemellato con altri progetti in Italia (Sicilia, Napoli/Sorrento, Torino e Milano) e all’estero (Londra, Berlino) dando la possibilità ai residenti ed ex residenti di avere un punto di riferimento in queste città, di attivare scambi con residenti lì e l’opportunità al programma di rimanere in stretto contatto con le questioni e le tendenze extra regionali e internazionali. Il progetto mira a espandere questo network di anno in anno. Il 40% degli artisti residenti sono italiani, il 50% stranieri e il restante 10% è riservato a artisti appena usciti dall’università. La partecipazione al progetto è regolata da un sistema di Applications. Il Comitato Scientifico dell’Associazione GIGANT, costituito da artisti e critici di fama internazionale, vaglia le applications e seleziona i residenti. Tutti gli incontri del programma pubblico che si svolgono a CASTRO vengono documentati con video riprese e sono conservati in un archivio online accessibile agli iscritti alla newsletter.

CASTRO (Contemporary Art Studios Rome) is an alternative learning program created to support Italian and foreign artists, curators and researchers at various stages of their career, and it promotes a an experimental, versatile and highly collaborative model of learning. CASTRO's programming is articulated on two parallel tracks, linked by exploring a common theme, which varies from year to year. The first binary is dedicated to the public and includes Artist Talks, Curator's Round Tables, Project presentations, Cineforum. The second binary is dedicated to resident artists and provides Studio tutorials 1 to 1, Individual Studio Visits, Open studio days during which the spaces are open to the public, Excursions, Workshop with local artisans, Online Blog hosted by CASTRO website for residents use. CRITS are CASTRO's most important activity, a series of meetings where artists, both resident and external, present their work, finished or in-progress, in front of a public of people to whom will be required to comment and criticize the work. CASTRO is twinned with other projects in Italy (Sicily, Naples / Sorrento, Turin and Milan) and abroad (London, Berlin), and it can provide residents and ex-residents reference points in these cities, always staying in close contact with regional and international issues and trends. The project aims to expand this network year by year.
40% of resident artists are Italians, 50% foreigners and the remaining 10% is reserved for artists just graduated. Participation in the project is governed by an application system. The Scientific Committee of the Association GIGANT, that includes internationally renowned artists and critics, reviews the applications and selects the residents. All CASTRO public program meetings are recorded and the videos are stored in an online archive accessible to our subscribers.
