Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office.

The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of “lung adenocarcinoma,” as suspected from tests conducted beforehand.

The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications.

Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, according to the statement.

POPE LEO SCHEDULED FOR LUNG SURGERY.

Pope Leo XIV ended his Sunday Angelus address today with this information:

“Dear friends, recently, during some check-ups, doctors discovered a localized nodule on my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-defined. The doctors believe intervention is necessary, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed. The procedure is already scheduled for the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers. Thank you, and have a blessed Sunday!”

Let us pray for the success of his surgical procedure and for speedy recovery.

🙏 In a moving moment during his Apostolic Journey, Pope Leo XIV visited the Grotto of Apparitions in Massabielle, Lourdes, to pray before the Virgin Mary and entrust the future of the French nation to her care. 🇫🇷✨

In his prayer, the Holy Father asked Our Lady for fraternal harmony, peace, the protection of families, and wisdom for political leaders, while entrusting the sick and all those in need to her motherly heart. He also left the Golden Rose at the feet of the statue. 🕯️🌹

He emphasized that every human life is a precious gift from God even in sickness, suffering or old age. He encouraged the sick that they have an irreplaceable place in the heart of the Church and invited pilgrims to bring hope to their families and communities. The call for conversion also applies to the Church itself, which needs to humbly acknowledge its own mistakes.

Pope Leo XIV is in France for his fifth international apostolic journey.

The visit began with a meeting with the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron. Afterward, he will deliver an address at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

A significant moment will be the prayer of Vespers with bishops, priests, and consecrated persons at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. And at the end of the day, the Vigil with young people at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

TODAY, ARCHBISHOP 𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗘𝗡 IS 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗗

Today, Thursday, September 24, 2026, the Catholic Church celebrates the beatification of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in St. Louis, Missouri.

For generations, Archbishop Sheen used the pulpit, radio and television to proclaim the Gospel to millions. His ability to communicate the Catholic faith made him one of the most recognizable Catholic evangelists of the modern era. Pope Leo XIV himself highlighted Sheen's evangelizing work through the media in his message today.

But Fulton Sheen was more than a gifted communicator.

He was a bishop, priest, teacher, writer and evangelist who constantly sought to bring people closer to Jesus Christ.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗪𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗛𝗜𝗠?

𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗗

Sheen understood that the truth of the Catholic faith should not be hidden from the world. He used the communication tools available in his time to reach people who might never have entered a church.

Today, we have Facebook, YouTube, podcasts, livestreams and countless other platforms.

The question is not simply whether we use them.

What are we using them for?

𝗖𝗛𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥

Sheen's message ultimately pointed beyond himself.

The goal of Catholic evangelization is not to make the messenger famous.

It is to make Christ known, loved and followed.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗕𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬

Defending Catholic teaching does not require hatred for those who disagree with us.

We can explain what the Church teaches firmly while speaking with patience, clarity and charity.

𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛

The Church does not beatify someone because he was famous.

Beatification is a solemn recognition that a person lived a life of heroic Christian virtue or, in the case of a martyr, gave his life in fidelity to Christ, and that the Church permits public veneration in a particular context.

Tomorrow, Fulton Sheen will be presented to the faithful as Blessed Fulton Sheen.

His beatification should not simply make us admire his past.

It should challenge us to ask:

Am I using the gifts God has given me to bring others closer to Christ?

The world still needs evangelists.

It still needs Catholics who know their faith.

It still needs people willing to speak the truth with courage and charity.

And it still needs Christians who will point beyond themselves to Jesus.
