The exhibition is now open to the public and we look forward to welcoming you throughout this weekend.

Visitors can explore a site-specific installation conceived especially for the Foundation’s spaces, alongside a new body of paintings developed during Zvavahera’s residency in Rome. These works position personal experience—such as the passing of the artist’s grandmother—as a structure that intertwines with daily emotions, where joy and anxiety remain in constant dialogue with memory and the presence of heaven.

For her solo exhibition at Fondazione Memmo, Portia Zvavahera develops an intimate and reflective body of work centered on the passing of her grandmother. This loss remains active in her inner life, resurfacing repeatedly through dreams. The exhibition connects this personal experience to broader contemplations on heaven and its imagined presence as a guiding, symbolic layer within earthly life. Rather than treating these ideas as abstract, the works position them as structures that intertwine with lived experience - where daily emotions, including joy and anxiety, remain in constant dialogue with memory and absence.

Henry Taylor unfolds an intimate yet powerful meditation on presence, memory, and social reality, intertwining biography, culture, and history.
In his studio, newspaper clippings coexist with archival photographs from the Civil Rights Movement, alongside snapshots of familiar and unfamiliar faces: there is no hierarchy in his gaze: every subject carries dignity, complexity, and narrative weight.

The exhibited painting, “Hershal Earl, when he was young, a youth” (2022), shows a figure, portrayed frontally and head-on, occupying a canvas of imposing dimensions—a choice that amplifies the young man’s presence and heightens his symbolic and identity-driven significance.

Taylor’s works, populated by figures from the Black community and symbols of historic struggles, traverse the entire spectrum of the human condition. They become visual biographies, enduring testimonies to the history of individuals and of entire communities.

Prem Sahib’s research explores sexuality, intimacy, and desire within q***r communities; his minimalism renders visible a non-synchronous temporality made up of memories, desires, and absences, becoming a means of questioning the emotional duration of experiences and their persistence in space.

“Helix III” is a plaster relief featuring at its center a male figure that embodies the “ideal” body of antiquity. The artist has intervened by inserting chromed steel piercings along the edges, in stark contrast to the figure’s classical pose.

The relief is a plaster cast derived from a bas-relief referencing Neoclassical aesthetics that was installed in the gay sauna “Chariots” in London’s East End, which closed in 2016 to make way for the construction of a luxury hotel. By rescuing from near destruction objects of historical q***r significance and reworking their symbolic memory, Sahib draws on an urban archaeology capable of rethinking time and memory.
