What does agroecology look like in practice?

This article from the Institute for Agroecology at the University of Vermont highlights four inspiring examples of how agroecological approaches are helping build more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

From farmer-led research to reduce pesticide use, to knowledge co-creation networks in West Africa, to projects explore the links between ecosystem health and human well-being.

👉 These initiatives demonstrate that agroecology is far more than a farming method: it is a framework for transforming how we produce, govern, and relate to food systems.

The examples featured include:

🌱 Participatory research with potato farmers to develop ecological alternatives to pesticide-dependent pest management.

🌍 Farmer Research Networks in West Africa that bring together farmers, researchers, and communities to co-create locally adapted agricultural knowledge and solutions.

🤝 The SYMPHONY project, exploring the connections between biodiversity, ecosystem health, food systems, and human well-being through an integrated, systems-based approach.

🏛️ Research on food system governance that examines how policies, institutions, and community engagement can support more equitable and sustainable regional food systems.

🦋🌿Colombia is taking bold steps toward a more sustainable, sovereign, and resilient food system through agroecology.

In this powerful message, Martha Viviana Carvajalino Villegas, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, reflects on the urgent global challenges facing agri-food systems, from conflict and fuel dependency to the climate crisis, and highlights agroecology as a pathway toward sustainability, resilience, and food sovereignty.

She also celebrates the historic adoption of Colombia’s agroecological public policy, built through collective work, regional dialogue, and the leadership of communities working across the territories to transform production models and strengthen environmental resilience.

This is more than agricultural policy: it is a collective commitment to dignity, health, sustainability, and what the Minister calls “a great revolution for life.”

🇨🇴 Colombia is one of the latest countries to have joined the Agroecology Coalition. Find out more about our membership on our website! https://agroecology-coalition.org/members/

🎉 The Agroecology Fund (AEF) presents "Agroecological Entrepreneurship Starts Here", a new report exploring how grassroots organisations across Africa are building enterprises that restore ecosystems🌱🌿 while strengthening local economies 💼🏘️.

Drawing on AEF’s Business Planning Grants, the report highlights how 15 organisations are advancing agroecological food systems through locally rooted, economically viable models.

Key insights include the persistent “missing middle” in agroecology finance:
• Most enterprises require $10,000–$250,000💰 to grow
• Microfinance is too limited, while larger investments exceed their scale📊
• Commercial lending remains inaccessible due to high costs and collateral requirements⚖️

🌱 Last week the Agroecology Coalition joined partners under the Women and Youth-led Network Alliances for Agroecology and Organic Agriculture (WYNA) Programme for the World Cafe “Digital Pathways to Agroecology and Organic Agriculture Transition,” bringing together participants to explore how digital innovation can accelerate agroecology transitions.

The discussion highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing, youth engagement, and collective action in strengthening food system transformations. Speakers explored how digital platforms, peer learning, and AI-supported tools can support farmers through climate adaptation, soil health monitoring, pest management, and access to agroecology knowledge.

📚 Speakers from YPARD, AGSN, Biovision Africa Trust, PELUM Uganda, and the Agroecology Coalition emphasized that digital pathways are not only about technology, but about connecting farmers, researchers, CSOs, policymakers, and communities.

The Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture (KCOA) Platform was highlighted as an important regional knowledge hub advancing agroecology transitions since 2022. Through digital knowledge sharing, peer learning, and documentation of indigenous knowledge, the platform supports collaboration across Africa and provides access to more than 2,800 agroecology knowledge products in English and French.

🌍 The Agroecology Coalition shared its role in fostering collaboration and network building across regions through webinars, working groups, case studies, and regional convenings that connect practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and donors. Acting also as a knowledge hub and advocate for agroecological food systems transformation, the Coalition continues to promote knowledge and resources on agroecology accessible for everyone.

A key message from the webinar was clear: technology alone is not the solution. Digital tools must be guided by agroecological principles, equity, inclusion, and local knowledge to support meaningful and lasting transformation. 👩‍🌾

🫘 On March 19th, 2026, the Agroecology Coalition convened a deep dive session on “Seed Systems in the Agroecological Transition: Governance, Policy and Best Practices”.

🌿 The session brought together Coalition members, practitioners, researchers, farmer organizations and civil society actors to examine the role of seed systems within
agroecological transitions and identify opportunities for collaboration.

The session aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the critical role of seeds in agroecological transitions, identify actions that Coalition members can advance collectively on seed systems, and contribute to broader discussions linked to the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

🧑‍🌾 In her opening remarks, Esther Penunia from the Asian Farmers Association (AFA) emphasized that seeds are not merely agricultural inputs, but a foundational resource for family farmers alongside land, water, forests and pasturelands.

🪴 In his presentation on seed governance, Simon Degelo from SWISSAID gave insights on the main factors for continued loss of seed diversity and the importance of farmer managed seed systems for agroecological transformation of food systems.

🇰🇪 In her presentation, Tabby Munyiri gave insights into the work of Seed Savers Network (SSN) Kenya, connecting practical work to maintain seed diversity with
advocacy work. She demonstrated how SSN works with community seed banks (CSB) to improve the conservation and sustainable use of seed diversity.

💥 How can we insulate food systems from geopolitical chaos and supply chain disruptions?

A new report from IPES-Food argues that countries can no longer afford to rely entirely on volatile global markets and fragile supply chains to feed their populations.

The report highlights practical solutions – from strategic food reserves and supply management to stronger local food systems and agroecology 🌱 – that can help stabilise prices, support farmers, and strengthen resilience in an increasingly unstable world.

🎉 Celebrating Plant Health Day is a reminder that agroecology places plant health at the center of resilient, sustainable food systems. 🌱

In agroecological systems, plant health is not treated as an isolated issue of pest or disease control — it emerges from the design of diverse, living agricultural ecosystems.

By strengthening biodiversity above and below ground, agroecology enhances the natural ecological processes that support plants: nutrient cycling, biological pest regulation, soil structure, and water regulation. This reduces vulnerability to stress and builds long-term resilience to climate change.

Healthy plants are therefore not just the result of management practices, but of well-functioning agroecosystems where ecological relationships are actively supported rather than simplified.

Protecting plant health means protecting the integrity of the entire system they depend on — soil life, biodiversity, and ecological balance. Agroecology offers a pathway to achieve this through diversity, integration, and ecological function.

Healthy plants. Healthy agroecosystems. Resilient food systems. 🌿

🌏 In this video, Vijay Kumar shares insights into the transformation of agriculture in Andhra Pradesh through the Climate Resilient Natural Farming program.

By supporting women-led self-help networks, the initiative empowers farmers to lower cultivation costs, reduce financial distress, and build resilience against crop failure.

A key approach has been the gradual adoption of natural farming, starting with small plots, allowing farmers to witness benefits before scaling up.
