What does agroecology look like in practice?
This article from the Institute for Agroecology at the University of Vermont highlights four inspiring examples of how agroecological approaches are helping build more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems.
From farmer-led research to reduce pesticide use, to knowledge co-creation networks in West Africa, to projects explore the links between ecosystem health and human well-being.
👉 These initiatives demonstrate that agroecology is far more than a farming method: it is a framework for transforming how we produce, govern, and relate to food systems.
The examples featured include:
🌱 Participatory research with potato farmers to develop ecological alternatives to pesticide-dependent pest management.
🌍 Farmer Research Networks in West Africa that bring together farmers, researchers, and communities to co-create locally adapted agricultural knowledge and solutions.
🤝 The SYMPHONY project, exploring the connections between biodiversity, ecosystem health, food systems, and human well-being through an integrated, systems-based approach.
🏛️ Research on food system governance that examines how policies, institutions, and community engagement can support more equitable and sustainable regional food systems.
