BAYAN-Europe welcomes the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in connection with his crimes against humanity as investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC). This long-awaited development marks a significant victory for the thousands of victims of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs and their families as well as the repression and brutal killings of activists and civilian communities, who have relentlessly fought for justice despite threats, intimidation, and state repression.
For years, Duterte and his cohorts have tried to evade accountability, shamelessly justifying the extrajudicial killings and human rights violations under the guise of a so-called war on drugs. His administration fostered a culture of impunity, emboldening state forces to commit brutal acts with the assurance of protection from prosecution. Today, his arrest signals that justice can no longer be denied.
We condemn Rodrigo Duterte’s ruthless disregard for human rights and the rule of law. The countless lives lost, families shattered, and communities devastated by his regime’s violence cannot and should not be forgotten. This arrest is not just a vindication for the victims but a resounding message to tyrants and human rights violators everywhere: you will not escape justice.
We call on the Filipino people to remain vigilant and ensure that Bongbong Marcos surrenders Duterte to the ICC, and that they will not allow this development to be exploited for political gain.
BAYAN-Europe calls on the international community to ensure that Duterte and his enablers are held fully accountable for their crimes. We also call for the immediate extradition of Duterte. Filipino migrants in Europe, who have long demanded justice and accountability, are eagerly awaiting Duterte’s extradition to the Netherlands. We remain vigilant and steadfast in our commitment to see this case through to his conviction.
Let this moment inspire and strengthen our resolve to continue the struggle for genuine justice and democracy in the Philippines.
