The achievement of the IAPG objectives will lead to the:
• increase of a research base and the strengthening of the Geoethics from the scientific point of view;
• identification of methods for its more effective application;
• reflection on the role that geoscientists can have in society and the identification of suitable forms, positions, means and actions to be adopted by them;
• growth of aware

ness about our responsibility, both as Geoscientists and as members of the human community. and above all to:
• the involvement of the community in the idea of a common and shared “geo-heritage”, to be considered as a cultural, educational and scientific value, as well as a social capital;
• a cultural renewal in the way we perceive and relate to our Planet;
• the sensitization towards the defense of life and the richness of the Earth, in all its forms.

This year, we celebrate the 10th edition of the International Geoethics Day, which will take place on 15 October 2026. The annual theme for this edition is: "Bridging Disciplines, Connecting Responsibilities".

The 2026 edition highlights the importance of dialogue and collaboration among geosciences, humanities, social sciences, education, policy, and local communities to address today’s environmental and societal challenges. This event encourages shared responsibility, sustainability, and respect for the Earth system as common values for a more resilient and inclusive future.

If you want to organize an event (conference, webinar, seminar, field trip, etc.) to celebrate the International Geoethics Day 2026, please inform the IAPG Secretariat by sending an email to: [email protected]. The IAPG will be happy to promote your event.

IAPG officially launches the International Geoethics Day on 12 October 2017, during the Earth Science Week 2017. The aim of the International Geoethics Day is to raise the awareness of the geoscience community and society as a whole about the importance of ethical, social and cultural aspects of geoscience knowledge, research, practice, education and communication.

The International Geoethics Day will be held every year during the Earth Science Week.

IAPG welcomes proposals to organize initiatives aimed at promoting geoethics locally and globally to celebrate this day.

Events already planned:

International Seminar (for invitation only)
Geoethics and Global Ethics in a Time of Polycrisis: Comparative Perspectives on Human–Earth Relations
Assisi (Italy), 16-18 November 2026

Conference (in Italian)
Geoethics and Responsibility in the Earth Sciences (Geoetica e Responsabilità nelle Scienze della Terra)
Rome (Italy), 12 October 2026

"... Perhaps not everyone knows that there is an invisible yet remarkably resilient thread linking St. Francis to geology. The places chosen by the Saint for prayer were not accidental: the unique rock formations of the Apennines profoundly influenced Franciscan spirituality and, in more recent times, have even guided important scientific research at the global level. ..."

In 2026, Italy and the Franciscan community are experiencing a moment of exceptional significance: the eight-hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Francis (1181/1182–1226; fig. 1). As highlighted by the INGVambiente Blog (in Italian), this anniversary is known as the Centenary of the Transit...

As part of the Inspiring Girls project promoted by ValoreD, Silvia Peppoloni, geologist at INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), President of the IAPG (International Association for Promoting Geoethics) and Chair of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics, has been invited as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) role model to meet primary school students at the Deutsche Schule Rom on the occasion of Earth Day 2026.
During the meeting, Silvia Peppoloni will share with the children her personal and professional journey, explaining how her passion for geology began and highlighting the challenges and rewards that characterize the work of an Earth scientist.
The initiative will represent a moment of inspiration and guidance, aimed at encouraging scientific curiosity from an early age and helping to overcome gender stereotypes related to STEM disciplines. The meeting will take place in conjunction with Earth Day, promoting environmental awareness and responsibility towards the planet, while offering young students concrete examples of commitment, passion, and dedication in the world of science.

We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Geoethics Working Group (GWG) of the European Geosciences Union (EGU):
https://www.geoethics.org/post/launching-the-egu-geoethics-working-group

Silvia Peppoloni will serve as Chair. The Working Group includes David Crookall, Giuseppe Di Capua, Jens Klump, and Ioanna Triantafyllou.

The EGU Geoethics Working Group is the result of over 15 years of work on geoethics at the EGU General Assemblies, through numerous events that have engaged hundreds of colleagues from around the world.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the EGU President, Prof. Peter van der Beek, and the EGU Executive Secretary, Dr.Philippe Courtial, for their strong support in this new endeavour and for the opportunity to further strengthen geoethics within the EGU community and the wider international geoscience community. We also thank the EGU Council for approving the proposal.

The EGU Geoethics Working Group will foster awareness, reflection, and action, advise the EGU Council on the ethical, social, and cultural dimensions of the geosciences, and promote responsible conduct among geoscientists in their research, professional practice, and interactions with society and the Earth system.

The EGU Geoethics Working Group is a new component of the International Geoethics Research Infrastructure (IGRI), which includes the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG), the Commission on Geoethics of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), the Chair on Geoethics of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH), the School on Geoethics and Natural Issues, the Journal of Geoethics and Social Geosciences, and the SpringerBriefs in Geoethics series.
