"The Church has to be there."

That's what Fr. David Kiblinger, SJ, said about his ministry to men and women held in ICE detention at the Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center in Missouri — and it's exactly what Catholic volunteers with Abide in Love Ste. Genevieve are doing.

From pen pal outreach and calling cards to Spanish-language Bibles and visits from priests, this lay-led ministry is bringing the presence of Christ to people who are often isolated from their families, their communities, and their legal rights.

This is the Church visiting Christ in the stranger. This is the Matthew 25 mandate lived out in real time.

"No one is excluded from God's love."
Yesterday, Pope Leo XIV visited Bata Prison in Equatorial Guinea — one of the last stops on his historic first apostolic journey to Africa. Standing in a rain-soaked courtyard with 600 inmates, he delivered a message that goes to the heart of why we do this work:
"Each of us, with our unique stories, mistakes and sufferings, remains precious in the Lord's eyes."
He reminded the incarcerated that they are not alone — and reminded the world that true justice must always promote the dignity and potential of every person.
This is the Gospel. This is Matthew 25. This is why the Church visits Christ in prison.
