Valpontida doesn’t exist, but the Flysch of Pontida does.
What were you doing 94 million years ago? Like, during a global oceanic cataclysm?
You probably weren’t there watching the Flysch di Pontida take shape…
This is the rock that defines and truly gives identity to our wines: fragrant, mineral, deep and fresh at the same time.
The short version, simplified but not far off: this used to be the Tethys, the great ocean — basically a seafloor, and northern Italy didn’t even exist yet.
As the African plate drifted north, it triggered the incredibly slow process of compressing the Tethys sediments, which in turn started the uplift of the Alps.
As the pre-Alpine range rose, a layering process began too: some material fell along the slope of the forming mountains, some came from dense sediment-laden underwater currents.
Layer upon layer of sandstone, sand, clay and marl.
Beneath our vineyards lies a global extinction event from 94 million years ago.
