In Lanzarote, the answer is geothermal. A well just 60 metres deep, commissioned this year, now delivers 1 megawatt of cooling capacity pulled straight from the ground beneath the island.

Marit Brommer, CEO of the International Geothermal Association, shared the case during Workshop 3 of GTI Academy’s Empowering Islands Programme, and it reframes the story.

🏝️ Islands can't ship their waste problems away. They have to solve them.

We're proud to be part of a webinar series that puts island circular economy front and centre and even prouder that two projects we actively contribute to, ReBoat Project and Ecomedislands Interreg Euro-MED, are featured throughout the series.

🌏 Last week, our Chair Gianni Chianetta was in Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme Cohort VI.

Alongside island leaders and energy experts from French Polynesia, Madagascar, Montserrat, New Caledonia, Sint Eustatius, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos, Gianni spent the week deep in conversation exploring the real challenges these islands face on their journey to 100% renewable energy.

Alongside Blue Planet Alliance, connecting islands and building the networks that matter, Greening the Islands Foundation brings the technical expertise to help shape the roadmaps that make 100% RES a reality.

Thanks to Francois Rogers and Amanda Ellis and all those involved for making this such a meaningful week.

Five days. Eight island teams. Dozens of conversations about what it actually takes to make the energy transition happen at island scale. This is exactly where we need to be.

🌍 Earth Day is no longer about awareness. It is about action.

In a time of rising energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty, the transition to resilient and renewable-based systems cannot wait.

Across the world, islands are already leading, accelerating renewables and strengthening energy independence through solutions that work in real conditions.

At Greening the Islands Foundation, we scale these solutions, supporting islands as drivers of a more secure and sustainable future. Because the future is not something to protect. It is something we must build.
