Space to move, suitable food, proper veterinary care and the freedom to behave naturally. These are needs, not extras.

This World Farm Animals Day, let’s remember that more sustainable farming must also consider how animals live and are cared for.

As consumers, we can look beyond reassuring packaging: ask how animals are raised and look for independently verified animal-welfare claims.

What do lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans have in common?

We are all primates. Yet around 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, mainly because of habitat loss, hunting and illegal wildlife trade.

In Madagascar, World Sustainability Foundation’s Save the Primates initiative has contributed to the Maromizaha Conservation Project.

Here, researchers study families of indri, the largest living lemur, using passive acoustic monitoring to analyse their calls and better understand them. The initiative has also supported reforestation and environmental education involving local communities.

This International Primate Day, meet the indri, the singing lemur whose calls are helping researchers understand it better.

What others throw away can become the beginning of something new.

In Camilla Machado’s atelier, onion skins, fruit residues and fish scales are reinterpreted as design materials. Through botanical printing, leaves and flowers leave their impressions directly onto silk without chemical dyes, making every piece impossible to reproduce exactly.

Her approach goes beyond materials. Bespoke production helps limit overproduction, while garment rental can keep each creation in use for longer.

Certified under the Friend of the Earth Sustainable Fashion standard, Camilla Machado proposes a different idea of luxury, one shaped by rarity, craftsmanship and a closer relationship with nature.

Can a safari camp welcome guests without shutting wildlife out?

Some souvenirs carry more than a memory.

Objects made from coral, shells, feathers, skins, teeth, wood or other wildlife materials may come from protected species or contribute to damaging trade. What looks harmless in a market can have a hidden cost for ecosystems.

Before buying, ask:

What is it made from?
Where did it come from?
Can it be legally taken home?

When in doubt, choose local crafts that do not use wild plants or animals.
