Friend of the Earth

Friend of the Earth We love and preserve ecosystems by certifying sustainable agriculture and farming.

Friend of the Earth is an international certification program for products from sustainable agriculture and farming. FAO definition of sustainable agricultural development is "the management and conservation of the natural resource base, and the orientation of technological and institutional change in such a manner as to ensure the attainment and continued satisfaction of human needs for present a

nd future generations. Such development... conserves land, water, plant and animal genetic resources, is environmentally non-degrading, technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable." Friend of the Earth’s mission is to promote sustainable agricultural practices by means of certification and consumers awareness. Following the tangible results obtained with Friend of the Sea - the international certification program for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture (www.friendofthesea.org) - Friend of the Earth was founded in 2013. The certification standard has been developed based on FAO's SAFA (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) guide lines. Its principles are based on:

- the preservation and protection of the ecosystem,
- use of integrated pest management practices,
- improved energy efficiency,
- resources optimization,
- regulatory compliance,
- corporate social responsibility,
- chain of custody. Audits are run by independent certification bodies, according to the strict sustainability criteria established by Friend of the Earth. Friend of the Earth is growing rapidly, and aims to become the main international certification program for sustainable agricultural production.

Behind every certified product, there is much more than a logo.

There are independent standards, responsible sourcing, traceability and continuous improvement.

Because real sustainability isn't just what we see on the shelf—it's everything that happens before.

That's why looking beyond the label matters.

What's one thing you always check before buying a product?

On 2 July, we joined Torino Fashion Week for a day of B2B meetings, talks and runway shows, where sustainability, creativity and innovation came together.

It was a pleasure to meet Maria Ester Gonçalves de Almeida, Head of the Fashion Division of the Trade Promotion Sector,
Representative of the Brazilian Consulate General in Milan and the Brazilian designers.

Meeting these designers and learning about their collections offered a deeper insight into the creativity, identity and craftsmanship that continue to shape Brazil’s fashion scene.

For Friend of the Earth, it was a valuable opportunity to connect with designers, businesses and institutions working towards a more sustainable future for fashion.

👕 Before it reaches your wardrobe, a T-shirt has already been through a remarkable journey.

It begins with raw cotton. It passes through skilled hands, craftsmanship and countless decisions before becoming something we wear without a second thought.

Every product has a story.

Understanding that story helps us make more informed choices. Verifying it helps build trust.

That’s why independent sustainability certification matters.

At Friend of the Earth, we believe transparency should be part of every product’s journey.

💬 What’s the oldest T-shirt you still wear? Tell us how long you’ve kept it.

**A tomato is one of the most common foods on our tables.
But how often do we stop and think about what is behind it?**

Water, soil, agricultural practices, workers, supply chains, certifications.

What seems simple is actually connected to a complex system that can have a significant impact on people and the environment.

Join the free webinar *"Sustainable Tomato Production and Certifications"* and discover how more responsible tomato production can contribute to a more sustainable food system.

Before a product reaches your hands, it has already made an impact.
On soil.
On water.
On biodiversity.
On the people and places behind its production.

That is why sustainability cannot be judged only by how “green” something looks.
For land-based products, responsible choices start at the source: how raw materials are grown, how resources are used, how supply chains are managed and how nature is protected along the way.

Friend of the Earth certification helps make this commitment visible and verifiable.

So every choice can become more than a purchase.
It can support a better way of producing.

👉 Companies: certify your land-based products.
👉 Consumers: look for Friend of the Earth certified products.

On World Bee Day, we are reminded that bees are not just “nice to have” in nature.
They are part of the systems that feed us, support biodiversity and keep ecosystems alive.

But habitat loss, pesticides, climate change and the decline of wildflowers are making their work harder every day.

Protecting bees can start with small choices: planting pollinator-friendly flowers, avoiding unnecessary pesticides, supporting responsible farming and protecting green spaces.

💬 Comment with 🐝 if you want to help protect pollinators.

When a species becomes endangered, it is never just about that species.

It means something around it has started to break:
a forest cut down, a river polluted, a food chain disrupted, a habitat made too small to survive.

On Endangered Species Day, we are reminded that protecting wildlife starts long before the last few individuals are left.

It starts with protecting the places they live.
With reducing the pressure we put on ecosystems.
With supporting conservation projects that help species recover, not just survive.

Because every species has a role.
And when we protect that role, we protect the balance of nature itself.

💬 Can you name one endangered species from your country? Write it in the comments.

🌍 Be honest: what do you think hurts the planet the most today?

Plastic pollution?
Overconsumption?
Food waste?
Indifference?

Earth Day is a good moment to celebrate nature.
But it is also the right moment to ask harder questions.

🌊🌿 Land or sea, the message is the same: we cannot keep looking away.

How sustainable are your habits really?
We often think of sustainability as something big, complicated and far away.
But what really makes a difference are the small actions we take every day:

1- Do you carry a reusable shopping bag?
2- Do you try to avoid food waste?
3- Do you pay attention to what you buy?
4- Do you reuse before throwing things away?

🌍 Sustainability is not about being perfect.
It is built through the choices we make every day.

💬 How many of these do you already do? Drop your number in the comments 👇
