🏆 Last year, , a multimedia artist from Luanda, Angola, won the inaugural award for his profound exploration of history, politics, and the legacies of colonialism. Through photography, installation, and performance, Kia Henda’s work exposes the complexities of Angola’s past while drawing universal connections to migration, displacement, and cultural identity.
Beyond his artistic production, Kia Henda has co-founded initiatives that support emerging talent in Angola as co-founder of “F**kin’Globo” an independent artist platform in Luanda, and KinoYetu, an initiative promoting filmmaking and visual arts. He is also committed to fostering critical dialogue and empowering creative voices. Kia Henda’s practice is a testament to the power of art to confront systemic racism, cultural fragmentation, and the enduring impacts of colonialism, while offering visions of resilience and hope. His work, alongside finalists Natalia Kaliada and Mohamed Sleiman Labat, showcased the incredible potential of art to drive meaningful change.
