⚒ Many are the restoration and maintenance works carried out by the workers of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano.

⚖️ A series of essential operations aimed at preserving the extraordinary artistic heritage of the Cathedral subject to the inevitable flow of time, air pollution and cyclical weather conditions that, relentlessly, leave their indelible mark on the precious Candoglia marble ❤️‍🩹

These conservation interventions would not, however, be possible without the valuable support of the many donors who join, with a deep gesture of love and solidarity, our fundraising projects 🙏

💝 For this reason we wish to thank you: because, together, we can continue to take care of "our beloved Duomo" and be promoters of its beauty in the world.

A priceless treasure to pass on to future generations and the world to come.
You can make the difference.

"Like a filigree of delicate arabesques, the edifice rises with grace, the design of its statues wrought with the same exquisite finesse one finds in an alabaster vase... One feels how deeply religion stirred the life of nations, and comes to comprehend the immense means the Church was compelled to employ, that such constructions, whose completion in those times spanned centuries, might be brought into being."

🏗 Milan Cathedral is the extraordinary and long-yearned-for result of the efforts made by a succession of generations of workers who have poured, and still pour, their efforts and passion into the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, care and conservation of the Monumental Complex.

🙏But there's more. Milan Duomo is also the symbol and tangible representation of the immense generosity of the many donors who, since 1387, have decided to reserve a gesture of affection and solidarity for the Cathedral by contributing to support the usual and continuous restoration works, made necessary by the intrinsic fragility of Candoglia marble of which it is made.

💝A small gesture of inestimable value, a gesture that makes a difference, and that will allow us to hand down the artistic, historical and cultural beauty of the Cathedral to the generations to come, future witnesses of this extraordinary heritage of which they will become custodians and promoters.

🧐 Did you know that one of Milan’s first public clocks was housed on the bell tower of the Church of San Gottardo in Corte? 🕰️

🕰️ It’s no coincidence that the street below was known as the “Contrada delle Ore” (Street of the Hours).

⛪ The church’s tower, part of the Monumental Complex of Milan Duomo, was crafted from rosy cotto tile and white marble by Francesco Pecorari and remains a true gem of Lombard architecture.

Its octagonal structure, resting on a square stone base with slender corner columns, is a unique example of elegance and innovation.

✨ The biforas (double-arched windows), columned loggias and the distinctive conical roof known as a “cesto” anticipate Renaissance themes, making it a true vertical masterpiece.

🧐 Have you noticed anything different while walking around Milan Duomo?

⚒ Here’s a little help… After more than 10 years of hard and tireless work, the northern apse of the Cathedral is finally free from scaffolding.

🏗 Ten years during which Veneranda Fabbrica’s skilled workers were dedicated to cleaning the marble surfaces and replacing the deteriorated parts that had been marked by time and weather events.

😮 Today, you can admire it in all its renewed splendor!

🛠️ The scaffolding has climbed even higher, reaching the lateral spires.

🏗 It’s a hard-to-reach area, but essential to inspect closely. And once up there, the surprise: the marble was in worse condition than expected. Hidden among the intricate carvings, signs of weathering had quietly taken hold.

That’s where a new phase of restoration begins. A quiet, meticulous process that combines craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

🚿 First, a gentle water wash to remove surface dust and deposits.
Then comes a more refined technique: a low-pressure, spiral micro-air-abrasive system that delicately cleans even the most elaborate details without damaging the marble.

🎯 This isn’t just cleaning, it’s an act of love. A vital step to protect these extraordinary spires, which have watched over the city for centuries.

😯 18 meters in diameter, 4 tons in weight, an intricate system of scaffolding hoisted 60 meters high: these are the unique features of Milan Cathedral's suspended construction site 🏗

⚒ An incredible restoration work, which began in 2017 and is still ongoing, to secure the load-bearing architecture and "bring back to light" the pink marble of the statues, the pendentives and all the decorative elements that for a long time remained hidden from the gaze because they were blackened by layers of dust.

The Tiburio (Tiburium) is the perspective center and the theological heart of the Cathedral: that's why in the four corners at the basis of the dome the 4 large busts of the Doctors of the Western Church are placed: Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine and Gregory the Great 📖

🤯 On the dizzying Rooftops of Milan Duomo, the rock climbers workers are in action! 🧗‍♂️

With great skill and expertise, and in full safety, they descend along the imposing marble walls and between the flying buttresses to carry out the usual surface inspections and to clean away tufts of small vegetation growing in the cracks of the marble.

⚒ is known worldwide for the particular variety of its sculptural decorations. Among these countless faces, there are very few figures that remain etched in the memory of the faithful and visitors enough to be remembered accurately. One of them is certainly the sculpture by Marco d'Agrate representing St. .

🔪The apostle, who found martyrdom in Armenia where he was skinned and then beheaded, is depicted with his own skin slung over his shoulders, the knife, the instrument of his martyrdom, in his right hand, and the open Gospel held by his left hand. The work has always been striking for the impressive realism and anatomical precision of its details.

Last November, the statue was removed from its location to undergo cleaning and restoration operations, which will take about a couple of months, made necessary by the numerous surface deposits all over the sculpture. The restoration is being carried out by Eros Zanotti's company Magistri Restauro.

📍When the work is completed, the statue will be relocated back to the .
