Friend of the Sea

Friend of the Sea Friend of the Sea is an international certification program for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

Friend of the Sea was founded by Dr Paolo Bray - European Director of the Earth Island Institute's Dolphin-Safe Project. The Dolphin-Safe Project saved millions of dolphins from death in the tuna nets and started the sustainable seafood movement. Friend of the Sea is now a leading international certification project for products originated from both sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Certified

products from all continents include most of the traded species, fishmeal, fishfeed and Omega-3 fish oil. Products and their origins are audited onsite by independent international certification bodies, against strict Friend of the Sea sustainability criteria. Friend of the Sea certification requirements follow the FAO - Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. In particular, only products from stocks which are not overexploited can be certified (Art. 30 FAO Guidelines). In line with the FAO, Friend of the Sea pricing model is affordable also to artisanal fisheries and small-scale producers, representing over 50% of the Friend of the Sea certifications.

🐢 Every sea turtle has a story.

This weekend, on the occasion of World Sea Turtle Day, we met many of them: Trolly, Ciccio, Isabella, Mila, Shiro, Holly, Iris, Maya, Ammiraglio Alberto, Blue, Otello, Love and many others, at Fondazione Cetacea.

Each with its own journey. Each with its own challenges. Each representing a reminder of why marine conservation matters.

We experienced the joy of seeing Trolly and Ciccio take an important step towards their return to the sea, after months of care and rehabilitation at Fondazione Cetacea.

Supporting the recovery and protection of sea turtles is not just part of the World Sustainability Foundation’s mission. It is a commitment we proudly carry forward through projects like Save the Turtles, alongside the organisations and professionals working on the front line of conservation.

Today, we celebrate not only these extraordinary animals, but also the people who dedicate their time, expertise and passion to giving them a second chance.

💚 Which sea turtle’s story would you like us to tell next: Trolly, Ciccio or one of the other turtles we met at Fondazione Cetacea?

Most of us have a memory connected to the ocean.

A summer day.
A walk on the beach.
The sound of the waves.
A moment of peace.

The ocean gives us memories, emotions and beauty.

But it also gives us something much bigger.

It helps regulate our climate, supports extraordinary biodiversity and plays a vital role in making life on Earth possible.

On this World Oceans Day, let’s remember that the ocean is not just a place we visit.

It is a living world that needs our respect and protection.

Because future generations deserve to experience the same wonder we feel when standing in front of the sea.

🌊💙 Tell us: what is your favourite memory connected to the ocean?

Imagine your life without nature.
No clean water.
No fertile soil.
No pollinators.
No forests.
No oceans full of life.

The environment is not something separate from us.
It is the system that makes our lives possible.

On this World Environment Day, let’s remember something simple:
We do not protect nature because it needs us.
We protect nature because we need it.
💬 Drop a 🌍 if you care about protecting the planet.

Do fish feel pain? A simple question, yet one that has the power to change the way we look at fishing and aquaculture. Discussing fish welfare is not only about opening an ethical debate. It is about supply chains, sustainability, transparency, and the future of food.

This reflection inspired the workshop “Do Fish Feel Pain? Rethinking Fishing and Aquaculture for the Future of the Planet”, held on 26 May at STEP FuturAbility District, in collaboration with Friend of the Sea and IMCD Italia Technology Innovation Lab, a STEP Partner. During the event, Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea and the World Sustainability Organization, shared Friend of the Sea’s perspective: turning scientific evidence into practical tools for the industry. This commitment is reflected in the Fish Welfare standards developed by Friend of the Sea: 24 standards for aquaculture and 5 for fisheries, designed to promote more responsible practices, reduce animal suffering, and improve supply chain transparency.

A sincere thank you to STEP, IMCD Italia Technology Innovation Lab, and all participants for making space for this important conversation. Special thanks also to Riccardo Giacomessi, Business Development Director (Semi) Commodities EMEA and Business Development Director Food & Nutrition Greece at IMCD, whose contribution enriched the discussion with a valuable industry perspective.

Because the future of our oceans also depends on what we choose to see beneath the surface.

Collagen is everywhere.
But where does it really come from?

In the free webinar **“The New Gold Standard: Sustainably Sourced Fish Collagen”**, Paolo Bray and Yingying Wu will explore what makes fish collagen truly sustainable: responsible sourcing, Friend of the Sea certification, market trends, consumer expectations and innovation in collagen peptides.

The session will also feature the PB Leiner case study and the Hainan story.

Oysters do more than you think.

They filter water.
They support marine life.
They help keep coastal ecosystems healthier.

Small shell, big impact.

But pollution, habitat loss and unsustainable practices are putting these ecosystems under pressure.

On International Oyster Day, let’s celebrate oysters for what they really are: tiny ocean allies.

Would you notice if frogs started disappearing?
🐸Today, on Save The Frogs Day, we celebrate a species that tells us more about the planet than we might think.
Frogs help keep ecosystems in balance, support biodiversity and act as natural indicators of environmental health.
When frogs are at risk, it often means that wetlands, water quality and entire ecosystems are under pressure.
Protecting frogs means protecting much more than one species.
It means protecting the health of nature as a whole.

💬 Had you ever thought of frogs as a warning sign for the environment?
