Congratulations to Jodie Sun of BCIT: British Columbia Institute of Technology for receiving an Award of Merit in the 2026 VODA Student Competition for "Pointform." 🌟

"Youth aged 15–24 worldwide are increasingly vulnerable to loneliness, a challenge amplified by factors such as economic instability and the growing reliance on AI as substitutes for human interaction.

Pointform is a dynamic hub addressing this issue among young people in Vancouver. By providing youth-focused third places designed for spontaneous social interaction, Pointform creates opportunities for connection, fosters a sense of belonging, and supports youth expression and agency within the local community."

Congratulations to Isabella Boiago Gollücke of Kwantlen Polytechnic University for receiving an Award of Merit in the 2026 VODA Student Competition for "Casa Latina: A Cultural Gathering Centre for Latin American Immigrants in Vancouver." 🌟

"Casa Latina redefines the traditional community centre: it acts as an immersive cultural gathering hub tailored to Latin American newcomers in Vancouver that responds to the discrepancy of the recent growth of Latin American immigrants in British Columbia and the lack of physical spaces that carefully support them. The design draws inspiration from Machu Picchu, bringing its terraces, steps, and collectivistic values literally and abstractly into the space. Therefore, Casa Latina becomes a hub for connection and cultural expression."

Congratulations to Melika Gheisari of Yorkville University for receiving an Honourable Mention in the 2026 VODA Student Competition for "Living Layers: A Protective Shelter for Wildfire Displacement."

"Living Layers is a mobile shelter designed for individuals and families displaced by wildfires in Northwestern Ontario. Inspired by layered forest canopies, the shelter creates a calm and protective environment that supports both physical safety and emotional recovery. The modular structure can be transported and assembled quickly while providing a compact interior for sleeping, cooking, and daily routines. By combining portability, sustainability, and human-centered design, the project reimagines emergency shelter as a temporary home that supports comfort, stability, and recovery."
