Earth Day: Gender Equality in the Face of Climate Change
April 22 marks Earth Day, recognised as the largest non-religious holiday worldwide. On this day, people from every corner of the globe unite under a common purpose: the protection of our planet. It is an occasion when our right to clean air and water takes centre stage, and we pay special attention to a broad spectrum of environmental and social initiatives.
Zonta International, the most influential non-governmental organisation globally, is dedicated to building a better world for women and girls. It cannot remain indifferent to the challenges posed by climate change.
Climate change exacerbates both visible and unseen inequalities between the sexes, with women often bearing the brunt of its effects. In many regions, women serve as the primary providers of food, water and fuel for their families. Environmental disturbances threaten their livelihoods, health and personal safety. When natural disasters strike, access to healthcare may be lost, increasing risks to maternal and reproductive health. Scarcity of resources further intensifies gender-based violence, child marriage and sexual exploitation.
Addressing the issue of climate change and its impact on gender equality cannot be accomplished in a single day or with one social media post. Progress requires consistent, collective effort.
By joining the Zonta International campaign - STEP FORWARD FOR GENDER EQUALITY - with small steps we can lead to meaningful change!
Last year, members of the Zonta Club of Bourgas - Binka Kirova, Nadya Zheleva, Diana Ivanova and Zheina Zhekova - made promises in a video to support the campaign.
These commitments were honoured, demonstrating the power of individual and collective action.
How will you contribute?
Together, let us help our planet breathe!
STEP FORWARD FOR GENDER EQUALITY!
