A couple of weeks ago, Ellinor Maurstad and Mona Holm from Kvinnemuseet in Norway visited their sister museum Kvinnohistoriskt museum in Umeå, Sweden. Both museums are members of the IAWM network.

They got to take part in the opening of the new exhibition “Captured”, about women who were photographed by the police in Sweden in the 1800s and early 1900s. Currently, the museum also shows the exhibition “The Goddess Returns” on ecofeminism and art.

In addition to visiting the exhibitions, colleagues from the two museums were able to share experiences and discuss future collaborations.

We warmly recommend visiting both museums!

We are deeply saddened to share the news that our colleague Dr. Martha Ortiz Sotres, member of the IAWM Board, has passed away.

Martha was a Mexican visual artist and a graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with an established national and international career. Her work is part of the artistic heritage of institutions and museums across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, including the National Museum of China. She represented Mexico in biennials and cultural forums in countries such as China, Italy, Colombia, Argentina, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Monaco, and created murals in several Latin American countries. Among her recognitions were the UNAM University Merit Award, First Place in the International “Sport and Olympism” Competition (London 2012), and the Italy Prize for Art in Florence. Additionally, one of her works was acquired by Prince Albert II of Monaco.

We are grateful for her engagement, her ideas, and the inspiration she brought to our network. She will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Feminists and civil society activists from across the world have endorsed and signed a call initiated by 1,000 Iranian feminists, urging feminist solidarity with the people of Iran against tyranny.

These signatures have been collected amid continuing reports from inside Iran indicating that, alongside a nationwide internet shutdown and severe restrictions on communications, the violent suppression of protests and mass arrests are ongoing.

The signatories warn that the voices of the protesting people inside Iran are being silenced, and they stress that it is vital to reflect the diversity and multiplicity of voices within Iranian society, especially women and marginalised groups.

The Iranian feminists state:

As part of Iran’s civil society, we envision a future that is free, inclusive, prosperous, democratic, secular, and committed to justice, human rights, and gender equality. We hope for a space where all Iranians can freely express their demands and aspirations for the future of their country, and where a peaceful and democratic transition away from the repressive rule of the Islamic Republic can finally take place.

Media outlets are invited to cover this development. The full text of the statement and the list of signatories are available in the attachment to this email and also at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SIiPxmwFWa4n5_-27SqTNr3QOR3-WEzI1on7U9GYDI8/viewform?edit_requested=true

We are sharing this statement, signed by more than 500 Iranian feminists, in response to the ongoing violent repression of protesters in Iran, including the use of lethal force, mass arrests, and killings. As feminists, we believe in the power of transnational solidarity, particularly as people in Iran are being killed and violently repressed for resisting economic collapse, hunger, and systemic injustice, and for demanding freedom, dignity, and systemic change.

We call on feminist groups and allies to take concrete action by writing to UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato, contacting your country’s foreign office, and speaking out in local and international media. Your voices can help amplify the demands of activists, protesters, and communities enduring state violence in Iran.

‎‎We, a group of Iranian feminists, at a time when the Islamic Republic has cut off the internet and all channels of communication with the outside world while carrying out a brutal massacre of protesters, extend our hands to feminists around the world. We call on the global civil society and fe...
