A Perseid at the peak of the shower? Look closer.
Our all-sky camera at DeepLab Observatory (Maremma, Italy) caught this bright
fireball on Aug 13 at 01:35 UT — right in the middle of the Perseid maximum.
Everyone would call it a Perseid. It’s not.
Here’s the fun part: trace the trail backwards along a great circle and it misses
the Perseid radiant in Perseus by 71°. A true Perseid must point back to the
radiant — this one doesn’t even come close. It’s a sporadic fireball, a random
visitor that just happened to crash the party.
The data:
• Trail length: 8.6°
• End point: alt 54°, az 215° (SW), in Pegasus below the Great Square
• 45 s exposure, all-sky camera
• Site: 42.48° N, 11.56° E — one of the darkest skies in Italy
Swipe for the full annotated all-sky frame and the radiant geometry.
This camera runs every single night at DeepLab, monitoring the sky over our remote
hosting piers. If you’re looking for a dark site in Italy for your telescope, link
in bio.

🌑 It took a solar eclipse to get us posting again.

Literally. Months of silence on this page — then last night the Moon slid in front of the Sun and basically said: “Alright folks, no more excuses.”

Truth is, we never stopped: all this time we’ve been collecting (and processing) an embarrassing amount of photons. Long exposures, clear nights, the occasional technical meltdown, and a pile of files just waiting to see the light. Ironic, for photons.

Starting today, we’re back to sharing our work on a regular basis. And what better way to restart than with last night’s eclipse. 🌘

Stay tuned — the sky waits for no one. ✨

LDN 1270 – where darkness gives birth to light
In the heart of Cepheus, a cloud of dust paints silence among the stars.
Captured from our remote observatories through a 110 mm apochromatic telescope,
and processed in the Hubble Palette, LDN 1270 reveals the hidden colors of its shadow.
It doesn’t shine — it shelters, it protects, it prepares the birth of new light.
The darkness itself whispers the future of the sky.

The Return of a Giant
on these summer nights, while the world sleeps and the sky grows still, something magical happens: just before dawn, rising in the eastern sky, appears the constellation of Orion.
It feels like meeting an old friend again — the celestial hunter who heralds the coming of autumn and then winter.
A quiet, yet majestic arrival… repeating each year, bringing with it the timeless beauty of the stars.
You lift your eyes, and just for a moment, everything else fades away.

First light for the new Artec 300, a telescope capable of collecting a huge amount of light in a very short time. The setup is now ready to focus on long-term astrophotography projects aimed at capturing faint and elusive regions of the sky.
