In 1966, student activist Robert Martin — known by his pseudonym Stephen Donaldson - founded the Student Homophile League (SHL) at Columbia University.
At the time, being openly q***r could mean losing your friends, your job, or even your safety. Yet Donaldson and a small group of students believed visibility was the key to change. They fought for a simple but revolutionary goal: to be recognized.
On April 19, 1967, Columbia University officially granted SHL recognition, making it the first LGBTQIA+ student organization in the United States to receive a university charter.
In those early days, the group focused on dialogue, counseling, and mutual support - creating one of the very first safe spaces for q***r students. Their courage sparked a movement: within just a few years, over 150 similar groups emerged on campuses across the country.
Today, student q***r organizations exist all over the world - but it all began with a few students who dared to imagine a more inclusive future. 💪✨
