⭐️The GE.CO project aims to promote intergenerational and digital learning among young adults (18-30) and adults over 50.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 📶

The main causes of the technological gap between generations—especially between those over 50 and younger people—are multiple and often interconnected. Here are the most significant ones according to recent research:

* 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞: Younger generations are often "digital natives" raised with technology, while those over 50 have had to adapt to new tools and languages, usually developing less familiarity and digital skills.
* 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: The cost of technological devices or Internet connection can limit access to technology, especially among less affluent segments of the population.
* 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: A low level of education often creates a digital divide, as it limits the ability to acquire technological competencies.
* 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Many adults and seniors display a certain resistance towards new technologies due to fear of making mistakes or being deceived, also developing distrust towards digital tools.
* 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: People over 50 often have not received specific training on new technologies, either in the workplace or in private life, and the rapid pace of digital change makes it difficult to stay updated.
* 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐚𝐩: Differences exist between rural and urban areas and between men and women, with certain groups at risk of digital exclusion.

🇪🇸 Vigo Workshop: Building the Future of Intergenerational Learning! 🤝

What a productive working week in Vigo, Spain! We wrapped up a successful workshop focused on the planning and creation of dedicated Intergenerational Learning Centers (IGLCs) across Europe.

These centers are vital spaces designed to foster mutual exchange and solidarity between different generations—from young children to active seniors.

💡 Key Takeaways from Vigo:

The Power of Shared Sites: Discussions highlighted the success of co-locating services (like nursery schools and senior day centers) to create a natural, daily flow of intergenerational interaction. It's about building a common ground, not just scheduling a one-off activity!

Beyond Stereotypes: A core goal of future IGLCs is to actively combat ageism and promote reciprocal learning. We explored models where seniors teach essential life skills and experience, while youth share digital competencies and modern perspectives. Everyone is both a teacher and a learner.

A European Blueprint: This workshop, often part of broader EU/Erasmus+ initiatives, brought together practitioners from Poland, Georgia, Spain and Italy to share best practices. The goal is to develop a robust, flexible model for IGLCs that can be adapted locally.

Focus on Inclusivity: Ensuring the new centers serve the most vulnerable—addressing loneliness in the elderly and supporting socio-professional integration for young people—was a central theme. IGLCs must be anchors for social cohesion.

This working week in Vigo marks a critical step forward in turning the concept of Intergenerational Fairness into concrete, community-based projects.

Next Steps: We look forward to seeing the pilot IGLC models developed from these plans come to life!

🙌The World of Erasmus + is all about creating equal resources to institutions that are managed by youngsters, adults or seniors pursuing European Values around the World. We wanted to learn more about Intergenerational fairness and inclusiveness as our project fully supports creation of Intergenerational Learning Centers where communities of different backgroungs and age group come together to build stronger ties for activism and inclusion 🎊

Note: The European Union (EU) approaches Intergenerational Learning (IGL) Fairness and Inclusivity as a crucial component of Intergenerational Fairness and solidarity in the face of demographic change and societal challenges.

🤝 Intergenerational Fairness: The Core Concept

In the EU context, Intergenerational Fairness (IGF) is a foundational principle, enshrined in Article 3 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), which centers on ensuring that:

✅Decisions taken today do not harm future generations. This involves embedding a long-term perspective into policymaking across areas like climate action, economic governance, social policy, and the environment.

✅The distribution of resources, responsibilities, and opportunities between all generations (youth, adults, elderly people, and future unborn generations) is equitable and just. This means addressing imbalances in areas like:

✅Economic Indicators: Ensuring younger generations aren't disproportionately burdened with precarious work, housing insecurity, or public debt.

✅Access to Public Goods: Ensuring equitable access to healthcare, social transfers, and a clean environment for all age groups.

✅Political Life: Promoting the participation and influence of younger adults in political processes.

It is important to understand that being able to navigate social media, use video calls effectively, and understand online communities is now key to staying involved in local activities, organizing events, and keeping up with friends and family. It's about more than just scrolling; it’s about active participation in modern community life.

​Thanks to initiatives backed by the European Commission these inspiring seniors took a brave leap and enrolled in digital skills training. Soon our beloved chef Maysoon Hanna will take part in workshops dedicated to planning creation of Intergenerational Digital learning center in Spain 🇪🇸

It's the EU ensuring that every single citizen, from the youngest student to the wisest senior, has the tools to connect, contribute, and feel included.

​Interacting with participants from all ages showed us that no matter where you are in life, digital tools are the ultimate enablers.

They help us:

​This training was a REVELATION and True self-expression. It provided the skills to define vague ideas into clear, digital action plans.
