Only 10% in 🇩🇰 say they have no say at all—compared to 40% in 🇭🇷 and 38% in 🇭🇺.
📉 In many countries, most feel they have very little or no influence on what the government does.

Quanto siamo soddisfatti del funzionamento del nostro sistema democratico? La ricerca TRUEDEM rivela ancora profonde disparità tra i Paesi europei.

ALL IN ALL, HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU WITH THE WAY DEMOCRACY IS WORKING IN THIS COUNTRY TODAY?

High satisfaction in Nordic countries like Denmark 🇩🇰, Sweden 🇸🇪, and Finland 🇫🇮, where over 60% rate their democracy at 7 or above on a 10-point scale.

Widespread dissatisfaction in Hungary 🇭🇺, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, and Slovakia 🇸🇰, where large shares of citizens rate their democracy at 4 or below. In Hungary, 39% gave it the lowest possible score (1/10).

Poland 🇵🇱 and Germany 🇩🇪 fall somewhere in the middle, but with different skews: Poles are more polarized and lean toward dissatisfaction; Germans more evenly distributed, with moderate trust.

The results highlight stark differences in how democratic institutions are evaluated across EU member states — and how uneven public confidence has become.

🤝 Can democratic institutions still be trusted? How can trust be rebuilt across Europe?
The TRUEDEM Final Conference brings together researchers, public officials, journalists, and civil society actors to discuss how trust in democratic institutions can be understood, evaluated, and strengthened. Through concise presentations, engaged roundtables, and comparative insights, we focus on credibility, inclusion, and accountability in European governance.

TRUEDEM Survey Highlights Variation in Public Trust in Government Across Europe

How much do Europeans trust their governments to do what’s right? New data from the TRUEDEM project show notable differences in how people across Europe perceive their national governments.

🇬🇷 Greece leads with 41% of respondents strongly agreeing that “most of the time, I can’t trust the government to do what’s right.”
🇭🇺 Hungary follows closely with 39%, and then 🇧🇬 Bulgaria (37%) and 🇷🇴 Romania (35%) — all reflecting relatively high levels of political distrust.

In contrast:
🇸🇪 Sweden shows the lowest levels of strong distrust at 16%, while 32% strongly disagree with the statement — the highest share of strong trust across the sample.
🇩🇰 Denmark (29%) and 🇳🇱 Netherlands (28%) also report high levels of strong disagreement, suggesting comparatively greater public confidence in government.

Countries like 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇮🇪 Ireland, and 🇦🇹 Austria show more balanced responses, indicating a mix of trust and scepticism.

Quanta fiducia hanno i cittadini nella possibilità che un politico sia chiamato a rispondere delle proprie azioni al cospetto di un giudice? Emergono differenze tra i Paesi europei.

📊 New data from 24 European countries reveal stark differences in how citizens assess the likelihood that government ministers would be held accountable after failing in their duties.

Respondents were asked to rate this likelihood on a scale from 1 (“Extremely unlikely”) to 10 (“Extremely likely”). The percentage selecting “1 – Extremely unlikely” varies substantially across countries.

Highest levels of public pessimism were recorded in:

🇬🇷 Greece – 41%
🇧🇬 Bulgaria – 41%
🇸🇮 Slovenia – 38%
🇭🇺 Hungary – 36%
🇷🇴 Romania – 35%
🇱🇹 Lithuania – 34%
🇭🇷 Croatia – 29%
🇸🇰 Slovakia – 28%

Lower levels were observed in:

🇳🇱 Netherlands – 7%
🇩🇰 Denmark – 9%
🇧🇪 Belgium – 12%

These results reflect considerable variation in public expectations of political accountability across European democracies, particularly between Northern and Southeastern Europe.
