🤝 Can democratic institutions still be trusted? How can trust be rebuilt across Europe?
The TRUEDEM Final Conference brings together researchers, public officials, journalists, and civil society actors to discuss how trust in democratic institutions can be understood, evaluated, and strengthened. Through concise presentations, engaged roundtables, and comparative insights, we focus on credibility, inclusion, and accountability in European governance.
🧭 The day opens at 10:00 with a presentation of key findings from the TRUEDEM project, featuring Christian Haerpfer 🇦🇹 (Universität Wien), Christian Welzel 🇩🇪 (Leuphana Universität Lüneburg), Domenico Maddaloni 🇮🇹 (Università degli Studi di Salerno), Sokratis Koniordos 🇬🇷 (Πανεπιστήμιο Πελοποννήσου - University of the Peloponnese), Celine Belot 🇫🇷 and Frederick Gonthier 🇫🇷 (Université Grenoble Alpes), Pavol Baboš 🇸🇰 (Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave), and Alenka Krašovec 🇸🇮 (University of Ljubljana). Opening remarks will be delivered by Agnieszka Turska-Kawa and Tomasz Pietrzykowski 🇵🇱 (Vice Rectors, University of Silesia), Christian Haerpfer 🇦🇹, and Paloma Martin 🇪🇺 (European Commission).
🗣️ At 11:30, the roundtable Fostering Institutional Trust through Credible, Inclusive, and Responsive Governance brings together Bi Puranen 🇸🇪 (Bikupan Research Institute), Ladislav Cabada 🇨🇿 (Metropolitní univerzita Praha), Monika Rosa and Lukasz Scieborowski 🇵🇱 (Polish Parliament), Maciej Biskupski 🇵🇱 (Silesian Voivodship Government), and Maciej Stachura 🇵🇱 (Vice-President of Katowice City), moderated by Agnieszka Turska-Kawa 🇵🇱 (University of Silesia).
🎤 At 13:30, keynote speaker Pippa Norris 🇺🇸 (Harvard University) will deliver The Pillars of Trustworthiness in Democracies: Lessons for Europe and Beyond, with Dawid Tatarczyk 🇵🇱 (University of Silesia) as discussant, moderated by Christian Haerpfer 🇦🇹.
🌍 At 15:00, the panel Civil Society Organisations and Civic Participation as Foundations of Democratic Trust features Meta Novak 🇸🇮 (University of Ljubljana), Claudia Palt 🇦🇹 (Institute for Comparative Survey Research), Cezary Wosiński 🇵🇱 (Foundation for Dialogue and Civic Development / SOWARD Educational Group), Hanna Kelm 🇵🇱 (Polish Teachers’ Union, University of Economics in Katowice), and Boglárka Koller 🇭🇺 (National University of Public Service), moderated by Kornelia Batko 🇵🇱 (University of Silesia).
🔍 At 16:30, the panel Reconsidering Political Trust and Distrust in Contemporary European Democracies brings together Christian Welzel 🇩🇪 (Leuphana University of Lüneburg), Radosław Markowski 🇵🇱 (SWPS University), Celine Belot (Université Grenoble Alpes), Claudiu Tufiș 🇷🇴 (Universitatea din București), and Damian Guzek 🇵🇱 (University of Silesia), moderated by Frederick Gonthier 🇫🇷 (Université Grenoble Alpes).
