The journey to the natural habitats of native orchids in Andalusia eventually comes to an end. Of course, not without a few highlights:

In the “City of Flowers,” Estepona, the group visited the famous orchidarium. The curator, Manuel Lucas García, personally took the time to guide them.
After so much relaxing greenery, it was time to raise the pulse a bit again with a sailing trip off Marbella at 18 knots.

On the final day, the group headed to beautiful Málaga. The historic garden Jardín de la Concepción impressed the travelers just as much as the picturesque 11th-century fortress Alcazaba.

Dinner at a trendy bodega with tapas and wine perfectly rounded off the day!

Auch die Reise zu Naturstandorten heimischer Orchideen in Andalusien endet mal. Natürlich nicht ohne ein paar Highlights:

In der Stadt der Blumen, Estepona, besucht die Gruppe das berühmte Orchidarium. Für die Führung hat sich der Kurator Manuel Lucas García persönlich Zeit genommen.
Um den Puls nach so viel entspannendem Grün wieder ein bisschen in die Höhe zu treiben ging es mit 18 Knoten auf einen Segelturn vor Marbella.

Am letzten Tag ging es ins wunderschöne Málaga. Der historische Garten Jardin de la Concepcion begeisterte die Reisenden ebenso wie die malerische Festung Alcazaba aus dem 11. Jahrhundert.

Das Essen in einer angesagten Bodega mit Tapas und Wein hat diesen Reisetag perfekt abgerundet!

On the last full day, the group set out once again on an orchid hunt. Our sensational botanical guide Antoine Giardina had promised us a few new discoveries—and of course, he delivered once again.

In the Ficuzza forest area in the mountains south of Palermo, around 30 orchid species thrive in a variety of habitats.

During a traditional Easter picnic, we enjoyed the organized lunch boxes and soaked up the sun in perfect weather—right in the middle of one of the most species-rich orchid meadows of the entire trip.

After the trip, we will present all the orchids we found by name, following a final fact check.

In the evening, we celebrated the end of the journey, full of wonderful impressions, with a four-course dinner in a traditional fish restaurant.

Am letzten ganzen Tag ging es für die Gruppe nochmal auf Orchideenjagt. Unser sensationeller botanischer Führer Antoine Giardina hatte uns noch ein paar neue Funde versprochen. Natürlich hat er auch dieses Mal wieder Wort gehalten.

Im Ficuzza Waldgebiet in den Bergen südlich von Palermo fühlen sich in unterschiedlichen Habitaten 30 Orchideenarten heimisch.

Bei einem traditionellen Oster-Picknick konnten wir uns über die organisierten Luchboxen freuen und haben bei bestem Wetter Sonne getankt. Und das innerhalb einer der artenreichsten Orchideenwiesen dieser Reise.

Nach Abschluss der Reise stellen wir euch, nach einem abschließenden Faktencheck, nochmal alle gefundenen Orchideen namentlich vor.

Am Abend haben wir den Abschluss der Reise mit so vielen tollen Eindrücken bei einem vier Gänge Menü in einem traditionellen Fischrestaurant gefeiert.

After so much fresh countryside air, it was finally time to feel the pulse of Sicily’s largest city. The group traveled from the hotel in Trabia, enjoying great views along the way, to the Cathedral of Monreale (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The adjacent monastery and the cathedral were vividly brought to life during an extensive guided tour — a true cultural and visual highlight.

We then continued with our guide Maria into the lively city center to explore the main sights. Afterwards, we had truly earned the chance to enjoy the fantastic variety of local street food specialties.

For many, the highlight was the somewhat challenging climb to Palermo’s best viewpoint.

After some free time, we visited Palermo’s botanical garden, where we didn’t miss any of the key highlights thanks to another guided tour.

A bit of big city life did everyone a lot of good.

Nach so viel Landluft war es nun an der Zeit mal den Puls der größten Stadt Sizilien zu fühlen. Es ging für die Gruppe vom Hotel in Trabia, entlang super Aussichten, zur Kathedrale von Monreale (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe). Das dazugehörige Kloster und die Kathedrale wurden uns bei einer ausgiebigen Führung anschaulich vermittelt. Ein kulturelles und visuelles Highlight.

Dann ging es mit unserer Führerin Maria weiter ins belebte Stadtzentrum um die wesentlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten kennenzulernen. Danach hatten wir uns die tolle Auswahl an lokalen Streetfood-Köstlichkeiten wirklich verdient.

Das Highlight für viele war der etwas herausfordernde Aufstieg zur besten Aussicht Palermos.

Nach etwas Zeit zur freien Verfügung durften wir den Botanischen Garten Palermos besichtigen. Die wesentlichen Highlights sind uns dank einer Führung nicht entgangen.

Ein bisschen Big City Life tat allen wirklich gut.

Dank der perfekten Organisation durch haben wir die kurze Zeit in Palermo richtig toll nutzen können.

Alongside the search for the orchids of Andalusia, the fellow travelers were also treated to other spectacular sights.

A visit to Ronda was on the itinerary. The city is built on steep cliffs, with the old Moorish quarter separated from the newer part of town by a deep gorge. Connected by an 18th-century bridge, this scenically stunning city was explored in detail.

Setenil de las Bodegas is equally picturesque and worth seeing. The travelers will surely remember the houses built beneath giant sandstone overhangs. But the rest of the village is also impressive, with beautiful views and charming narrow streets.

Last but not least, this was also a place where the group could catch wonderful glimpses of the many Semana Santa processions—something you simply can’t avoid at Easter.

Neben der Suche nach den Orchideen Andalusiens wurden den Mitreisende auch weitere spektakuläre Sehenswürdigkeiten geboten.

So stand ein Besuch in Ronda auf dem Programm. Das die Stadt ist auf steile Klippen gebaut. So ist der alte maurische Teil vom neueren Stadtteil durch eine tiefe Schlucht getrennt. Verbunden durch eine Brücke aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, wurde die landschaftlich spektakuläre Stadt erkundet.

Ebenso malerisch und sehenswert ist Setenil de las Bodegas. Die Reisenden werden sicher die Häuser in Erinnerung behalten haben, die unter gigantische Sandsteinvorhänge gebaut wurden. Aber auch der Rest des Ortes beeindruckt mit Ausblicken und malerischen Gassen.

Nicht zuletzt hier konnte die Gruppe auch tolle Blicke auf die vielen Semana Santa Prozessionen erhaschen. An denen kommt man natürlich an Ostern nicht vorbei.

By now, everyone in the group has become a true specialist in searching for orchids in Sicily. Nevertheless, our guide Antoine Giardina is far from unnecessary. Without him, the group would have missed many unknown locations.
Even our wonderful bus driver, Silvio, is already excited about his finds.

Having now arrived at the southern coast, the sun is coming out more and more. Two overnight stays are planned in the south: one in Marina di Ragusa and one in Agrigento. There, we were also able to enjoy a cultural highlight of the trip. The guided tour through the Valley of the Temples offered fascinating insights into antiquity. Not least, we also found an orchid there that has never before been documented in the Agrigento region. Unfortunately, it was not in full bloom: Anacamptis fragrans.

After the tour, the group had certainly earned a well-deserved break. At the organic winery, there was not only plenty of fine wines to taste, but also a fantastic selection of delicious food prepared especially for us.

Mittlerweile sind alle in der Gruppe zu richtigen Spezialisten für die Suche nach Orchideen auf Sizilien geworden. Trotzdem ist unser Guide Antoine Giardina nicht überflüssig. Ohne ihn wären der Gruppe viele unbekannte Standorte entgangen.
Sogar unser toller Busfahrer Silvio freut sich schon über seine Funde.

Mittlerweile an der südlichen Küste angekommen, kommt immer mehr die Sonne durch.
Im Süden sind zwei Übernachtungen geplant. Eine in Marina di Ragusa und eine in Agrigento. Dort konnten wir dann auch ein kulturelles Highlight der Reise genießen.
Die Führung durch das Tal der Tempel hat spannende Einblicke in die Antike geboten. Nicht zuletzt haben wir dort aber auch eine Orchidee gefunden, die in der Region von Agrigento noch nie beschrieben wurde. Leider nicht in voller Blüte: Anacamptis fragrans

Danach hat sich die Reisegruppe eine Stärkung verdient. Nach einer Führung auf dem Bio Weingut gab es natürlich auch reichlich zu verkosten. Aber auf phantastische feste Nahrung wurde für uns aufgetischt.

The small group searching for orchids in Andalusia was able to enjoy some sunshine in Granada under perfect weather conditions. Especially after the WOC, the walks through the Alhambra and the old Moorish quarter of Albaicín were truly refreshing.

During a guided tour of the Alhambra, the meaning behind the decorative elements as well as the history of the complex were vividly explained.

Throughout the city, the scent of orange blossoms filled the air. The participants also got a first glimpse of the upcoming Semana Santa processions. The preparations already looked very promising—so stay tuned.

The first orchids were also discovered right away.

For now, we are sharing some impressions. After the trip, we will present all the species that were found.

Die Kleingruppe auf der Suche nach Orchideen in Andalusien konnte bei bestem Wetter etwas Sonne in Granada tanken. Besonders nach der WOC taten die Spaziergänge durch die Alhambra und das alte maurische Viertel Albaicín wirklich gut.

Bei einer Führung durch die Alhambra wurden unter anderem die Bedeutung hinter den dekorativen Elementen und die Geschichte der Anlage anschaulich vermittelt.

Überall in der Stadt duftete es nach Orangenblüten. Die Mitreisenden bekamen auch bereits einen Vorgeschmack auf die Semana Santa Prozessionen. Die Vorbereitungen waren bereits sehr vielversprechend. Ihr dürft gespannt sein.

Auch erste Orchideen wurden direkt gefunden.
Wir zeigen hier zunächst Impressionen. Nach Abschluss der Reise werden wir alle gefundenen Arten zeigen.

Over the past two days, the group has already broken last year’s record in its search for Sicily’s wild orchids and couldn’t be happier with the results. The trained eye of our botanical guide, Antoine Giardina, was a great help. However, the weather continued to be less than ideal.

During these two days, we traveled from the northeast of Linguaglossa to Marina di Ragusa, visiting six spectacular locations along the way.

On Mount Etna, we were even greeted with a snowy hike—something no one had expected. The black lava rock, the unique species of birch, and the snow created an almost surreal contrast.

We are sharing some first impressions here. After the trip is completed, there will be another post featuring the orchids we found—this time with their names.

In den letzten zwei Tagen hat die Gruppe auf der Suche nach den wilden Orchideen Siziliens bereits den Vorjahresrekord geknackt und kann mit der Ausbeute überglücklich sein. Das geschulte Auge unseres botanischen Führers Antoine Giardina hat da sehr geholfen. Das Wetter zeigte sich jedoch weiter nicht von der besten Seite. In den Zwei Tagen sind wir vom Nordosten von Linguaglossa nach Marina di Ragusa gefahren und haben dabei sechs sensationelle Standorte besucht.

Am Etna erwartete uns sogar eine Schneewanderung. Damit hatte nun wirklich niemand gerechnet. Das schwarze Lavagestein, die besondere Birken-Art und der Schnee bildeten einen fast unwirklichen Kontrast.

Wir teilen hier erste Eindrücke. Nach Abschluss der Reise wird es nochmal einen Beitrag mit den gefunden Orchideen geben. Dann auch mit Namen.
