Dai muri della città ai muri del MoMA.
New York, 1961, MoMA: “The Art of Assemblage”, a cura di William C. Seitz. In mostra, “Prima o poi”, 1961, Décollage, 150,8 × 83,4 cm.
Nel catalogo, Seitz scrive che Rotella e Raymond Hains, “nello stesso spirito” dei situazionisti di Spoerri, strappano porzioni di ambiente dai muri e le presentano come quadri, un gesto che il critico Pierre Restany aveva già battezzato “nouveau réalisme”.
Non era un osservatore del suo tempo. Era uno dei suoi protagonisti.

New York, 1961, MoMA: “The Art of Assemblage,” curated by William C. Seitz. On view, “Before or After,” 1961, Décollage, 59.37 × 32.83 in.
In the catalogue, Seitz writes that Rotella and Raymond Hains, working “in precisely the same spirit” as Spoerri’s snare pictures, tear down portions of the environment and present them as pictures — a gesture critic Pierre Restany had already named “nouveau réalisme.”
He wasn’t watching art history happen. He was one of its protagonists.
