Ticca4danu

Ticca4danu TiCCA4DANU drives systemic, transformative change for climate change adaptation (CCA) in the Danube Macro-Region.

By 2028, our toolkit will empower cities and regions to implement just and effective CCA strategies, co-designed with local stakeholders. Our innovative approach applies Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) to the city-region level, linking it with Local Green Deals and enabling new business models, investment tools, and inclusive processes. With strong participation from public authorities, vul

nerable groups, and the private sector, the project aims to overcome structural barriers and promote climate-just resilience. Working with city-regions, we are developing practical tools, training, and governance models that accelerate real change. Rooted in transdisciplinary collaboration, and aligned with EU missions, the project scales through partnerships with the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) and involves neighbouring countries like Ukraine and Turkey. Our ambition: to shape between June 2025 – May 2028 a climate-resilient future by transforming how cities and regions adapt — together. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement n°101214311 and from the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). 🌍 Climate change is not only a local challenge, it is a shared responsibility across cities, countries, and generations.

In our latest TiCCA4DANU interview, İnal, Deputy Mayor of Uzunköprü Belediyesi / Uzunköprü Municipality (🇹🇷), shares why cooperation between cities and regions is essential for developing practical climate adaptation solutions.

He reflects on how Uzunköprü is learning from partner cities through examples in sustainable mobility, carbon emission reduction, wastewater reuse, efficient water management, energy solutions, and public-private cooperation.

Through TiCCA4DANU, partners are working together to turn shared knowledge into local action — and contribute to a more resilient future for the Danube Region and beyond.

Cooperation across sectors, governance levels, and thematic priorities is essential for building a more resilient Danube Region. 🇪🇺⚖️

At the joint meeting of the Danube Region Strategy(EUSDR) Priority Area 4 “Water Quality” and Priority Area 7 “Knowledge Society” Steering Groups in Bratislava, TiCCA4DANU contributed to important discussions on climate adaptation, governance innovation, regional resilience, and future cooperation pathways.

The exchange highlighted once again that meaningful transformation requires strong connections between policy, research, local needs, and practical implementation.

🌱 Climate resilience needs more than ambition: it needs evidence.

At Urban Future 2026 in Ljubljana, contributed to the discussion on how cities can demonstrate the value of resilience through data, metrics and practical examples.

Podravje - Maribor presented how the City of Maribor is approaching climate adaptation, with a focus on flood risks, nature-based solutions and wider benefits for urban quality of life.

A strong reminder that climate adaptation is also an investment in healthier, safer and more liveable cities.

🎥 What happens when climate scientists, finance experts, urban developers, innovators, and regional stakeholders come together in one live conversation on the future of climate adaptation in the Danube region?

This is exactly what we explored in the latest live streaming event we organised together with the Danube Region Strategy (EUSDR) PA7— and the result was truly inspiring.

For us, this was more than just an online event. It was a pioneering step toward creating new ways of engaging stakeholders across the Danube Region through dynamic, interactive, and accessible dialogue formats.

Over 70 participants joined us live for 1,5 hours of lively discussion, exchanging ideas and experiences on:
✔️ Climate risk and adaptation modelling for cities and regions
✔️Socioeconomic dimensions of just adaptation
✔️Local Green Deals – putting adaptation into action
✔️Financing pathways for adaptation
✔️How a city adapts in real time based on the example of Debrecen.

What made this event special was not only the diversity of expertise, but also the energy of the conversation and the inspiring examples shared throughout the session.

Heatwaves, floods, and growing pressure on cities are no longer future risks: they are already shaping daily life across Europe 🇪🇺.

But building climate-ready cities is not only about more policies. It is also about better collaboration.

In this video, Mia Čikeš, Expert Urban Regeneration and District Development at Europe, shares how Local Green Deals can help cities, businesses, and local stakeholders work together to build resilience and turn climate adaptation into practical action 🌱.

Her message is clear: climate adaptation works best when it is local, collaborative, and focused on real projects that make a difference.

🔔 Hooray to our very first Open Discovery Workshop (ODP) on hashtag at Burgas District.

Organised by the District Government, the workshop established the conceptual link between Municipality’s newly developed and matching CCA activities in the wider District. It brought together more than 30 participants from public authorities, academia, and civil society as well as partners from our neighbouring cross-border region Edirne Province ( 🇹🇷).

Opened by Prof. Tatyana Kotzeva (Deputy Regional Governor of Burgas District) and Maya Ruseva (Director, Strategic Planning, Burgas Municipality) our team from VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH and INFRAS facilitated the exploration and prioritisation of regional climate challenges and targeted CCA measures.

Kudos to University of Vienna and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) for presenting their top-notch analysis of climate risks and measures in Burgas District (https://lnkd.in/dy88sNEH).

In Burgas District, the 13 hashtag are the primary drivers and initiators of CCA ideas or measures. Targeted CCA measures thus need to facilitate synergies among these municipalities (as well as neighbouring Turkish regions), i.e. by improving data exchange or synchronising new initiatives.

Final results are:
👉🏻A District-wide CCA Strategy + Action Plan with a dedicated Budget
👉🏻A District-wide -based (Geographic Information Systems) cadastral map
👉🏻Climate hazard-related crisis points, including allocated mobile response forces
👉🏻Company CCA plans, including -Private Partnerships (PPPS) between insurance companies, local authorities and SMEs

In a next step, our team will further concretise these measures as part of a second ODP workshop in June in Burgas together with local business, experts and public authorities.

A big Thank You to all workshop participants and all our partners for the excellent workshop organisation!
Oliver Ziegler Eichler Friedrich Nirandjan Trendafilov Yordanova Schaffert
