Eurac Research

Eurac Research Eurac Research is a private research centre based in Bozen-Bolzano.

Our research addresses the greatest challenges facing us in the future: people need health, energy, well-functioning political and social systems and an intact environment. These are complex questions, and we are seeking the answers in the interaction between many different disciplines. In so doing, our research work embraces three major themes: regions fit for living in, diversity as a life-enhancing feature, a healthy society.

Professor Mousumi Banerjee has been working at the intersection of statistics, medicine, and artificial intelligence for many years.

👣 Her career has taken her from Calcutta to Michigan and, more recently, to the Institute for Biomedicine at Eurac Research in Bolzano where she is currently applying her expertise in collaboration with researchers from the institute’s biostatistics and epidemiology group to data from the CHRIS study: the largest population-based study to be conducted in Italy.

💥 What initially drew her to this field, and what continues to inspire her today? And how is she putting her experience to use at Eurac Research?

💧We love lakes at Eurac Research, they’re a source of fresh water, supporting drinking water supplies, agriculture, and industry.

🐟Our research looks at lakes and the key role they play in maintaining biodiversity, offering a habitat for countless species of fish, plants, and wildlife. Beyond their ecological significance, lakes contribute to climate regulation by keeping the planet cool, absorbing the floodwater and storing carbon. Additionally, they provide recreational and economic opportunities, attracting tourism, fishing, and other activities that support local communities.

However, these vital ecosystems are under growing pressure from climate change, pollution, overuse and invasive species. Lakes provide fresh water, support biodiversity and local economies, reduce flooding and help regulate the climate.

✨Today – on World Lake Day – we celebrate their importance and the urgent need to protect them.

What happens when you combine a summer day, mountain rescue, research – and a big dose of imagination?

⛺ 🏔️This year, our KidsCamp participants discovered mountain emergency medicine firsthand – watching a research tent go up and learning what it takes to conduct research high in the mountains.

🎨 Then they turned it all into art.

🖼️ Visit the exhibition in The Gallery at our headquarters until the end of August and discover mountain emergency medicine through the eyes of our youngest artists.
