“Your story matters”

Not every important story begins in a classroom.
Some begin with:
• overcoming barriers to education
• adapting to a new university environment
• questioning where we belong
• discovering how literature, history, philosophy, languages, or the arts shape the way we see the world

The Magna Charta Observatory Essay Competition invites students to reflect on how the humanities have influenced their experience of higher education.
The most powerful essays are often deeply personal.
Your perspective matters.
Your experience matters.
Your voice matters.

Why humanities matter

In an age shaped by AI, algorithms, and misinformation, the humanities matter more than ever.
They help us:
• think critically
• understand different perspectives
• question assumptions
• connect human experiences across cultures

That is why the Magna Charta Observatory chose the humanities as the theme of this year’s international student essay competition.
We are looking for essays that combine personal experience with thoughtful reflection on higher education and access to university.

You do not need to be an expert.
You do not need perfect English.
What matters is authenticity, clarity, and your unique perspective.

We remember with deep gratitude Professor Fabio Roversi Monaco (1938–2026), Rector of the University of Bologna from 1985 to 2000 and Founder and Honorary President of the Magna Charta Observatory.

In 1988, in Bologna, he promoted the drafting and signing of the Magna Charta Universitatum by 388 Rectors — a historic milestone affirming the fundamental principles of university autonomy, academic freedom, and international cooperation. Today, the Magna Charta is signed by more than 1,000 Rectors from 94 countries worldwide.

His far-sighted vision of the university as a global, independent, and socially responsible institution continues to inspire the international academic community.

His legacy lives on in the values that guide universities around the world.
