Fishing for Litter.

It sounds simple because it is exactly what it says: we fish for litter.

Across our global network, fishers collect marine litter from the Ocean and bring it back to shore, where it begins its journey toward the best end-of-life.

A simple idea. A daily action. A growing network.

Collection is only the beginning.

Once marine and coastal waste is removed from the environment, another essential part of the work starts: identifying the best available end-of-life option for each material.

Waste is sorted and assessed based on its characteristics and condition. Whenever possible, materials are sent for recycling. When recycling is not feasible, other authorized treatment options are considered, including energy recovery.

Collecting waste matters.
But what happens to it afterwards matters too.

Yesterday was World Cleanup Day.

For our fishers and coastal communities, cleanup is part of the work they carry out every day — recovering marine and coastal waste and bringing it into the right waste management streams.

Protecting the Ocean doesn’t happen once a year. It takes consistent action, day after day.

When technology can only go so far, experience matters.

38th America’s Cup rules limit the use of instruments to analyse weather and sea conditions during racing. So Rossa relies on the instinct and experience of its sailors to read and interpret the racecourse as effectively as possible. Just as a local fisher from Ogyre’s Italian fleet.

In Beyond the Racecourse, Luna Rossa sailor Vittorio Bissaro meets Alfonso Pellegrino. Two different ways of reading the sea come together — one shaped by experience, training, technology and performance, the other by observation, memory and everyday life on the water.

Not every life at sea begins the same way.

Antonio found his way to fishing almost by chance, after a career as a professional footballer. One day on the water was enough to change the course of his life.

Eleven years later, the sea has become his workplace — and the place where he finds a sense of freedom and peace he says is impossible to find on land.

Today, Antonio is part of Ogyre’s Italian fleet, working alongside other local fishers to collect marine waste from the Mediterranean.

Today is Global Plastic Overshoot Day 2026.

September 6 marks the point when the amount of plastic waste generated globally exceeds the estimated capacity of existing waste management systems to manage it safely over the entire year.

Across Europe, Africa, South America and Asia, we work with fishers and local communities to collect marine and coastal waste and help prevent further plastic from reaching the Ocean.
