Below is the invitation from the Accademia Petrarca in Arezzo, Italy. I am very pleased that they wanted to have this small study of Petrarch (English spelling) because it represents an event in history that has mostly been forgotten but is extremely important to us today.

In 1336, Petrarch climbed to the top of Mont Ventoux in the south of France simply to experience the view. Many historians have marked it as the “first modern act” because it had no practical or religious intent, it was simply a declaration of the self.

In addition, Petrarch represented three main ideas that, together, showed the way out of what he called, “the dark ages.” The first was the wisdom of history, the second was the structured beauty of poetic rhyme, and the third was the value of humanistic behavior.

We are in a period where many governments encourage cruel and ignorant behavior. Knowing Petrarch’s ideals shows us the way to being better human beings.
