What is a Green Algorithm and how it emerges?
A green algorithm is an artificial intelligence model designed to minimize its environmental impact by reducing energy consumption, optimizing computational resources, and lowering carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle.
This includes the training phase, deployment, and continuous use of the system.
Green algorithms emerge from the growing awareness that modern AI, especially large‑scale models, requires significant computational power, which translates into high electricity usage and substantial CO₂ emissions. As AI adoption expands, governments, researchers, and organizations have recognized the need to ensure that technological progress does not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.
The concept was born from three converging forces:
1. Scientific concern: Researchers began measuring the carbon footprint of AI models and found that some training processes consumed as much energy as several households over months. This triggered a push for more efficient architectures and training methods.
2. Policy and regulation: Institutions such as the European Union introduced frameworks encouraging responsible AI development. Initiatives like Spain’s *Programa Nacional de Algoritmos Verdes (PNAV)* promote energy‑efficient AI and provide guidelines, certifications, and public challenges to accelerate the transition toward sustainable AI systems.
3. Industry and societal demand: Companies and civil society increasingly expect digital technologies to align with climate goals. This demand has encouraged the creation of tools, standards, and best practices to measure, report, and reduce the environmental impact of AI.
