As we approach the halfway point of this year’s count, we are still testing Ashuradeh Protected Area as a new trial station for monitoring harrier migration, while continuing our raptor counts at the main station in Bardena, where the number of large eagles is steadily increasing.

One of the main challenges of counting harriers (Montagu’s & Pallid) in the lowlands is spotting them as they hunt among the vegetation during migration, while also ensuring we avoid double-counting.

In the second week, we rotated our teams between Bardena and Ashuradeh. We will share more details once the trial period for harrier migration is completed.

You can check out our daily Bardena data on Trektellen:

This year was originally planned to mark the start of our 80-day long-term standard count. However, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel—which could escalate at any time—along with the challenges of acquiring proper spotting scopes, has led us to postpone the project until next year.

Instead, we will seize the opportunity to conduct counts in the lowlands near the Caspian Sea, focusing particularly on Pallid Harriers. We will also test another station behind the ridge to assess how many raptors, especially large eagles, migrate through that area.

If the results prove promising, our first standard count may launch with as many as five stations: two in the lowlands and three in the mountains.

This season, we will begin on September 3rd and continue for 35 days across all five stations.

After a rainy day, we identified 100 Imperial Eagles today among nearly 400 large eagles. Steppe Eagles and Long-legged Buzzards are still migrating in good numbers, and our final pilot count may extend into late November to help us determine the end date for our first standardized count next year.

You can find today numbers here: https://www.trektellen.org/count/view/3657/20241114

For the third consecutive year we passed 1000 Imperial Eagles.
Imperials will tell us when we should end the count for our first standardized count in 2025.
Today we identified 39 Imperials among hundreds of large eagles, still relatively a high number.
