English
Algerian Parliamentary Elections
2 July 2026
Today, 2 July 2026, tens of millions of Algerian voters are heading to the polls to elect 407 new members of the People’s National Assembly (Parliament). This marks the country's second parliamentary election since the wave of protests that erupted in February 2019, which led, two months later, to the end of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s 20-year rule. The elections are being held under an open-list proportional representation electoral system.
According to official statistics released by the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE), 24.7 million voters are eligible to participate in the elections, including approximately 854,000 Algerian citizens residing abroad. A total of 32 political parties and 9,854 candidates, competing through 793 electoral lists, are contesting 407 parliamentary seats distributed across 77 electoral constituencies.
The elections also feature 2,032 female candidates, representing approximately 21% of the total number of candidates. Meanwhile, 5,304 candidates are under the age of 40, accounting for 54% of all candidates.
Since most of Algeria’s major opposition parties have decided not to boycott these elections, voter turnout is expected to be higher than in the 2021 early parliamentary elections. In that election, most of the country's principal opposition parties boycotted the vote, citing shortcomings in the electoral law, deficiencies in the law governing political parties, and restrictions on political freedoms. Consequently, voter turnout stood at 23%.
The main parties competing in these elections are:
1. National Liberation Front (FLN): Algeria’s historic and dominant political party, representing the traditional pro-establishment political current. Abdelkrim Ben Mubarak serves as the party’s Secretary-General.
2. Movement of Society for Peace (MSP): Algeria’s largest Islamist opposition party. It is headed by Abdelali Hassani Cherif, who ran against incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the most recent presidential election.
3. Socialist Forces Front (FFS): The oldest opposition party in modern Algerian history. It is a Centre-left (social democratic) party known for its strong commitment to democracy, secularism, and the rights, identity, and language of the Amazigh (Berber) people. The party is led by Youcef Aouchiche.
4. National Democratic Rally (RND): A nationalist, conservative, and centrist party. Economically, it advocates liberal economic policies and supports a market economy. It has long been regarded as the "second pillar of the ruling establishment," fully endorsing the agenda of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and remains a key component of the presidential alliance. Mustapha Yahi currently serves as the party’s Secretary-General.
5. Future Front (Front El-Moustakbal): A centrist nationalist party that presents itself as an alternative representing youth and political renewal, distancing itself from the traditional polarization between the hardline opposition and the established ruling elite. The party is headed by Fateh Boutbig, who is also leading its electoral list in these elections.
