We advocate and work to protect the rivers, streams and waterways of Iraq and support local communities in the sustainable use of these natural resources. Currently we have one Waterkeeper on staff (the Iraq Upper Tigris Waterkeeper, IUTW) based in Sulaimani, Kurdistan, northern Iraq, but In future, as Waterkeepers Iraq is developed, our jurisdiction will cover additional waterways and basins throughout the country.

On the World Environment Day, the Environment Protectors Organization in Sinjar, which is a sister organization to ours, and with whom we have mutually supported and assisted each other since the very beginning , has organized this activity to keep the environment clean and collect citizens' waste in a single location.

سەردەمێک هەبوو کە بەنداوەکانمان بە شێوازێکی ئارام و سروشتی بەشێک بوون لە ژیانمان. خەڵکی بۆ ماسیگرتن و مەلەکردن و گواستنەوەی کاڵا بەکاریان دەهێنان بە بەلەمی دارینی سادە کە لە کەرەستەی دۆستی ژینگە دروستکرابوون. ئەم ئاوانە سەرچاوەیەکی گرنگی ئاوی خواردنەوەی خاوێنیش بوون بۆ زۆرێک لە شار و شارۆچکەکانی خوارەوەی بەنداوەکان.

بەداخەوە ئەمڕۆ دۆخەکە گۆڕاوە. جێت سکی و بەلەمە بزوێنەرە گەورەکان ئەم شوێنە جوانانە دەگۆڕن بۆ ناوچەی پڕ لە دەنگەدەنگ و پیسبوو. دەنگی بەردەوامی بزوێنەرەکان، تێکدانی ژینگە، پیسبوون بە سووتەمەنی و زیانی گەیاندووە بە ژیانی ئاویی، کاریگەرییان کردووەتە سەر دەریاچەکە و سەرنجی ئەو کەسانەش کە دەیانەوێت بە ئارامی چێژ لە سروشت وەرگرن.

رۆژانی هەینی و کۆتایی هەفتە، زۆرێک لە خەڵکی چیتر هەست بە ئارامی ناکەن بۆ سەردانیکردنی ئەم شوێنانە بەهۆی قەرەباڵغی، دەنگەدەنگ و ئەو پشێوییەی کە جێت سکی و بەلەمە خێراکان دروستی دەکەن. لەبری بەسەربردنی کاتێکی خۆش کەشەکە بووەتە هۆی دڵەڕاوکێ و پیسبوون.

ئێمە پێشوازی لە بڕیاری قەدەغەکردنی جێت سکی و چالاکییە هاوشێوەکانی لە دەریاچەی دوکان دەکەین، چونکە هەنگاوێکی گرنگە بۆ پاراستنی ژینگە و پاراستنی جوانیی دەریاچەکە. بەڵام لە هەمان کاتدا هیوادارین لە داهاتوودا لایەنە پەیوەندیدارەکان ئەم ڕێنماییانە بە تەواوی جێبەجێ بکەن و توندتریان بکەنەوە.

پاراستنی سەرچاوە ئاوییەکانمان تەنها پەیوەندی بە ئەمڕۆوە نییە، بەڵکو پەیوەندی بە پاراستنیانەوە هەیە بۆ نەوەکانی داهاتوو.

There was a time when our waterways and reservoirs were part of our lives in a peaceful and natural way. People used them for fishing, swimming, and transporting goods with simple wooden boats made from environmentally friendly materials. These waters were also an important source of clean drinking water for many downstream cities and towns.

Today, unfortunately, things have changed. Jet skis and large engine-powered boats are turning these beautiful places into noisy and polluted areas. The constant sound of engines, the environmental disturbance, fuel pollution, and the damage to aquatic life are affecting the lake and the experience of everyone who wants to enjoy nature peacefully.

On Fridays and weekends, many people no longer feel comfortable visiting these places because of the overcrowding, noise, and chaos caused by jet skis and speedboats. Instead of relaxation and connection with nature, the atmosphere has become stressful and polluted.

We welcome the decision to forbid jet skis and similar activities in Dukan Lake, as it is an important step toward protecting the environment and preserving the beauty of the lake. However, we also hope the authorities will fully enforce and strengthen these regulations in the future, rather than making them easier to bypass.

Protecting our water resources is not only about today — it is about preserving them for future generations.

کوکی وەک پارچەیەک تیشکی خۆر کە لە ئاسمان ڕایکردبێت بەرەو پێشەوە ڕای دەکرد ڕاوی پەپوولەی دەکرد، خۆی دەدا بەدەم باوە، بە ناڕێکی لەناو گیاکەدا دەنیشتەوە وەک ئەوەی خودی خۆشی شێوەی سەگێکی وەرگرتبێت.
ڕوو بە جیاواز شوێنیان کەوت.
ئێستا نابینایە، بەڵام بە شێوازێک دەبینێت کە زۆربەی مرۆڤەکان هەرگیز نایبینن.

جۆرێکی سەیرن، مرۆڤەکان.
دیوار لە دژی ڕووبارەکان دروست دەکەین،
پاشان سەرمان سوڕ دەمێنێت بۆچی زەوییەکە تینوویەتی.
لەکاتێکدا، دوو سەگەکە هێشتا لە یاساکانی سروشت تێدەگەن:

Yesterday, we walked nine miles through high silent mountains, following fading animal trails in search of a disappearing river.
Cookie ran ahead like a piece of sunlight that had escaped the sky — chasing butterflies, leaping into the wind, landing clumsily in the grass as if joy itself had taken the shape of a dog.
Ru followed differently.
Blind now, but seeing in ways most humans never will.
Through scent. Through vibration. Through memory. Through trust.
Cookie always slows down for her.
And Ru always knows where he is.
Somewhere between them exists a language older than words.
And somewhere between the mountains, we found the truth:
the river had not disappeared naturally.
It had been stopped. Choked quietly behind a dam before it could continue its journey through the earth.
Strange species, humans.
We build walls against rivers,
then wonder why the land becomes thirsty.
Meanwhile, two dogs still understand the ancient agreement:
water must move, grass must breathe, and no living thing should be left behind.
So we walked home together through the evening wind —
one dog chasing butterflies,
one blind dog following the heartbeat of the world,
and one human trying to learn from both of them.

بەڵام ئەمڕۆ لە سلێمانی و دەوروبەری، خەریکە داری واشنتۆن و گرانبەها بەسەر سروشتێکدا دەسەپێنین کە بۆی بێگانەیە. ئەم دارانە بە تێچوویەکی زۆر و ئاو و ماندووبوونێکی بێمانا
دەهێنرێن، تەنها بۆ ئەوەی دواتر بە کۆمەڵ وشک بن و بمرن
ئەم هەفتەیە بەلای ڕیزێک لەو دارە واشنتۆنییە مردووانەدا تێپەڕیم.
بینینی ئەم دارانە لەناو بەفری چیاکاندا تەنها هەڵەیەکی باخداری نییە، بەڵکو نیشانەی پشتگوێخستنی ژینگە و لەدەستدانی یادەوەریی خاکەکەمانە. ئێمە هێشتا بەردەوامین لە کردنەوەی شوێنی نوێ بۆ ئەم دارە نامۆیانە، لەکاتێکدا چیا ڕەتیان دەکاتەوە.
کوردستان خاکی بەڕووە، نەک ئەم دارە گرانبەهایانە. کاتی ئەوە هاتووە گوێ لە چیاکان بگرین و بگەڕێینەوە بۆ ئەو دارانەی کە ڕەگیان لەم خاکەدا دەژی.

In the mountains of Kurdistan, the land remembers its own. Our identity was forged alongside the willow and the Oak—trees shaped by rocky soil, deep snow, and bitter winters. These native forests are the roots of our culture and our survival.
Yet today, across Sulaymaniyah, we are forcing Washingtonia palms into a landscape they do not understand. We call them "Washington trees," but they are strange species here, imported at a high cost of money, water, and labor.
And they are dying in mass.
I passed by rows of them this week—expensive, drying monuments to a dangerous idea. By forcing these trees into our harsh mountain climate, we are not modernizing; we are practicing ecological and cultural amnesia. We are ignoring the environment and failing to treat the land with the respect it deserves. Still, we open new spaces and continue to plant them, trying to make our home look like somewhere else.
Kurdistan is a land of Oaks, not Washington palms. The mountains reject what does not belong to them. It is time we finally listen to the earth and return to the trees that know how to stay alive in our soil.

Today, we had the chance to introduce Paia Studio and share its vision and future goals to a number of students from American University of Iraq Sulaymaniyah. We talked about how Paia Studio acts as an umbrella that brings together a number of organisations and initiatives, including Art Plus, Waterkeepers, and others. It was a great opportunity to explain our purpose, our collaboration, and the future we are working toward together.

Today we had a productive meeting with the Activities & Events Committee and key decision-makers at Nature Home in Culture Factory, with the participation of Waterkeeper Iraq. We discussed our future plans and outlined a high-potential path toward meaningful progress and impact.

ئەمە تەنها پاککردنەوەیەک نییە بەڵکو یادخستنەوەیەکە کە پاراستنی ژینگەکەمان لە کارە بچووکەکانەوە دەست پێ دەکات.

Today, on Earth Day (April 22), we came together for a meaningful cleanup campaign at Goizha Mountain, unfortunately affected by large amounts of litter and solid waste, became the focus of our efforts. With the dedication of passionate volunteers, we worked side by side to restore the natural beauty of this important place.

This initiative was organized by Waterkeeper Iraq and Kurdistan Organization, in collaboration with the Culture Factory and the Lutka Hiking Organization. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and commitment, more than two tons of waste were collected and removed from the area.

This is more than just a cleanup it’s a reminder that protecting our environment starts with small actions, and together, those actions create real impact.
