"تحت ظلال النخيل "
تحت ظلال النخيل الشامخة، تروي الأشكال المتراقصة على الرمال حكاياتها، بينما تحمل النسائم الأبدية همسات تُعيد صدى عصور مضت. في مشاهد غرب آسيا القاحلة، تتربع النخلة كرمز خالد يجمع الشعوب عبر هذه المنطقة، تربط بين الأرض والسماء، بأوراقها الخضراء الممتدة نحو الأفق. النخلة، التي منحت الحياة وحمتها عبر القرون، هي أكثر من مجرد شجرة؛ هي شاهد حيّ على تداخل الحضارات وتواصل الأجيال.
عبر الجزيرة العربية، يمتد درب زبيدة التاريخي، محفوفًا بالنخيل، حيث تتقاطع قصص السعودية والعراق. هذا الطريق الذي شهد مرور قوافل التجارة ورحلات الحج وتبادل الثقافات، شكل لوحة نابضة بالتنوع، ككاليودسكوب يتغير باستمرار، تحكي أنماطه قصص التلاقي والتكامل.
الإرث المشترك بين هذين البلدين يمتد آلاف السنين، منذ عصور ما قبل الإسلام، حيث شكّلت اللغة العربية والنظم الإسلامية ركيزة للتعبير الثقافي والحضاري. هذا الإرث العريق يشكل المحور الأساسي لهذا المعرض، الذي ينقسم إلى سبعة محاور رئيسية تتيح للزائر رحلة متكاملة لاستكشاف الروابط الثقافية العميقة بين البلدين.
في المعرض، نجد أسئلة الهوية والتراث تحتل الصدارة، مدعومة بتقاليد إسلامية ورافدينية غنية. هذه الجذور المشتركة لا تزال تنبض بالحياة، حتى مع ظهور الحداثة كحركة فنية متميزة في القرن العشرين. ورغم أنها مستوحاة من تيارات عالمية، إلا أن الحداثة في الشرق الأوسط حافظت على روح محلية، حيث ترتكز على التراث لتمنحها طابعًا فريدًا.
المناظر الطبيعية الجغرافية تلعب دورًا محوريًا في تشكيل الحركات الفنية المعاصرة. توفر بيئة السعودية فضاءً لاكتشاف الذات والتأمل الروحي. بينما في العراق، ترمز الأنهار والآثار القديمة إلى الصمود والتجدد، هذا التناقض بين مدن تنمو بسرعة وأراضٍ شهدت تغيرات متواترة، يُلهم الفنانين لرسم صور جديدة تُجسد الذاكرة الجمعية، والهجرة، والهوية.
من خلال الأعمال الفنية التي تجمع بين التقليد والمعاصرة، يفتح المعرض نافذة على تفاعل الثقافات والحوارات التي شكلت العلاقة بين هذين البلدين. كل عمل مختار يُقدم زاوية مختلفة لهذا النسيج الثقافي الثري، الذي تطور على مر الأجيال عبر طريق درب زبيدة.
يُتيح المعرض للزوار فرصة للتعمق في هذه الحكاية التاريخية الكبرى، واكتشاف كيف تمتد خيوط الماضي لتنسج حاضرنا وتلهم رؤيتنا للمستقبل.

"Beneath The Gaze of The Palms
In the shade of the towering palms, shapes dance in the sandy penumbra whilst the timeless breeze carries gentle sounds that whisper echoes of the past. It is in this landscape that the majestic palm reigns, a unifying symbol for Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Seen for centuries as both an earthly and celestial conduit, with its verdant fronds extending towards the sky, the palm at once nourishes and protects the land and its people. Through the deserts of the Arabian peninsula lies the ancient Darb Zubaydah trade route and along it, dotted with palms, the shared heritage of Iraq and Saudi Arabia merges and morphs like a vibrant kaleidoscope, its patterns shaped by the mingling journeys of pilgrimage, trade, and cultural exchange that have recurred over the centuries.
The deep connections between Iraq and Saudi Arabia span thousands of years, reaching back to the pre-Islamic era. Today, these nations remain bound by shared language and Islamic societal structures, which form the cornerstone of their cultural expression. This exhibition explores these connections through seven distinct themes that illuminate the common threads between these two cultures.
At its heart, the exhibition examines questions of identity and heritage in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, highlighting how their shared Islamic and Mesopotamian traditions have fostered enduring bonds between these nations. Meanwhile, Modernism as a distinctive art movement in the 20th century emerged in the Middle East, as with other regions around the world, characterized by a vernacular aesthetic and thematic elements deeply rooted in the local heritage and cultural traditions.The geographical landscapes serve as a permanent source of artistic inspiration. Saudi Arabia's environment offers a space for self-discovery and spiritual reflection. In contrast, Iraq's rivers and ancient ruins symbolize resilience and renewal. This dynamic juxtaposition of rapidly growing cities and land marked by continuous transformations instigates artists to create new visions that capture collective imagination and identity. These themes of memory and absence, and migration and movement, emerge through significant social and economic transformations, giving rise to novel interpretations of identity and everyday life in the contemporary Middle East.
By bringing together this collection of Saudi and Iraqi artists, modern and contemporary, we provide a platform for exploration and dialogue around the deep cultural connections and shared histories that have defined the relationship between these two lands over the ages. Through a multifaceted examination of overarching themes, we illuminate the artistic and architectural legacies that continue to shape these neighbouring nations. The works selected straddle mediums and materials, each offering a window into the intricate tapestry of cultural dialogue that has ebbed and flowed across this ancient route for generations. In doing so, it invites us to reflect on our own place within this timeless narrative, and to consider how the threads of the past continue to instruct the weave of our current cultural fabric and outline future steps.
