Inspired by a lecture they attended as students at the University of Amsterdam, SPARK Directors, Yannick du Pont and Michel Richter began SPARK as early as 1993. Following a documentary they watched about t

he atrocities in the Balkans, and a presentation by an 18 year-old boy who spoke about his experiences in a detention prison camp, Yannick and Michel had little knowledge at the time that this would be a life changing moment. Deeply impressed by the story, Yannick and Michel took action by setting up a team of students and professors to form the ‘Youth in Solidarity with Yugoslavia’ (YSY) foundation. Aimed at retaining the fading attention for the war, the foundation sought to help their peers in the Balkans through improving the educational system and restructuring and reforming universities. Based in Amsterdam and with one field office in Pristina, YSY organised Summer and Winter universities, student and staff exchanges, curriculum development and English language programs. The highlight was the 1996 Tuzla Summer University in Bosnia-Herzegovina, that, despite a curfew, damp dormitories and no electricity, Croat and Serb students came together in solidarity and followed one of 26 courses.

We’re happy to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between SPARK and Vision Agency for International Development (VisionAID), marking the start of a strategic collaboration in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

This MoU reflects a shared intention to work together on expanding youth economic inclusion, focusing on employability, entrepreneurship, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), alongside digital skills.

By bringing together SPARK’s regional and international experience and VisionAID’s local expertise, we aim to strengthen the reach and impact of the Networks of Change programme.

On 12 February 2026, marking the International Day to Prevent Violent Extremism, the Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government announced the development of a new strategy. The core objective of this initiative is to maintain peace and coexistence in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, a place where many different ethnic and religious backgrounds live together.

The announcement took place at the Ministry of Interior, led by Dr. Hemn Mirani, Director General of Diwan. During the event, the Ministry acknowledged SPARK's guiding role behind the project. This strategy is being developed in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Sparda, the KRG High Committee of PVE, along with several other international organizations and specialists.

Through the Networks of Change II programme, SPARK continues to support government-led efforts to promote prevention, reintegration, and long-term social cohesion, ultimately laying the foundation for lasting peacebuilding and youth prosperity in the region.

The Migrant Resource Center (MRC) held an awareness session at SPARK’s Chamchamal Youth Hub. The session focused on the risks of irregular migration, highlighted legal migration pathways, and offered practical training on CV writing and interview skills to better prepare local youth for the labor market.

SPARK encourages initiatives like this as part of its broader mission to empower youth, an approach that has been strongly reflected in the Networks of Change II (NOC2) campaigns. Through sessions like these, young people gain valuable insights into safe migration practices and employability skills, helping them make informed decisions about their careers and futures, while fostering the confidence to pursue opportunities safely and legally.

Last week, the University of Raparin’s Psychological and Social Counselling Center team joined students for a workshop on Emotional Resilience and Conflict Management, delivered by professionals from the AVT-L organisation.

These sessions aim to open new channels of communication between students and teachers, making both more approachable and supportive towards one another and their colleagues, while promoting a more positive mindset.

The workshop is part of the Networks of Change education programme, implemented by SPARK and funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We were proud to join the first Sulaimanyah National Entrepreneurship Summit, organised by the Supreme Council for Youth in Iraq under the Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.

At the SNE Summit, our Networks of Change campaigners showcased how youth-led innovation and community leadership can drive meaningful, locally rooted development. By building stronger connections between the Networks of Change network and local institutions, we are advancing localisation and empowering young entrepreneurs across the region.

During the panel on Youth, Innovation, and Future Skills, we highlighted that young people in the Kurdistan Region can tap into emerging global opportunities from technology to entrepreneurship, and the essential skills required to build a competitive, future-ready workforce.

These discussions further contributed to strengthening the Networks of Change community and expanding the connections between youth, institutions, and innovation actors across the region.

We were delighted to deliver a Communications Training for our local partners in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, as part of SPARK’s ongoing localisation strategy.

Throughout the training, participants strengthened their skills in developing communication strategies, writing for diverse audiences, social media management, photography and videography, as well as ethical communication practices. They also explored effective approaches to dealing with the press and public relations, and learned how to craft compelling stories that reflect their work and impact.
