🌟 Meet Ekhlas Hassoon Orphan Child Welfare Programme (OCWP) Assistant | Baghdad Field Office 💙

Ekhlas Hassoon began her journey with Islamic Relief worldwide - Iraq in 2014 as a volunteer. In 2019, she officially joined the organisation as a staff member, working as a representative within the Orphans Department.

In her current role as an Orphan Child Welfare Programme (OCWP) Assistant, Ekhlas works closely with orphaned children and their families, maintaining regular communication and conducting field visits to follow up on their well-being, circumstances, and evolving needs. 🤝

Through her continued engagement with the children and their families, Ekhlas has developed strong, respectful, and trusting relationships, creating an environment where families feel comfortable sharing their concerns and experiences.

📋 As part of her responsibilities, she also prepares annual reports and case follow-ups, helping ensure that the needs and circumstances of the children are properly documented, monitored, and addressed.

💙 With more than a decade of experience with Islamic Relief, Ekhlas continues to demonstrate dedication, compassion, and commitment to supporting vulnerable children and their families and contributing to the organisation’s mission.

SEED Project Inception Workshop

Islamic Relief Worldwide – Iraq, in coordination with the General Directorate of Agriculture in Halabja, and with the participation of the Mayor of Halabja, Directorate of Migration and Crisis Response Directorate, representatives of civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders, held the inception workshop for the Sustainable Economic Empowerment and Development (SEED) Project.

The workshop introduced the project, its key objectives, implementation approach, and the criteria and process for selecting participants and farmers.
Participants also took part in group discussions to share their views and recommendations on the project implementation approach and farmers selection criteria.
The meeting marked an important step toward launching the project and strengthening coordination and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Halabja.

ورشة انطلاق مشروع SEED

نظّمت منظمة الإغاثة الإسلامية عبر العالم – العراق، بالتنسيق مع المديرية العامة للزراعة في حلبجة، وبمشاركة قائممقام حلبجة، ومديرية الهجرة، ومديرية الاستجابة للأزمات، وممثلين عن منظمات المجتمع المدني وأصحاب المصلحة المعنيين، ورشة انطلاق مشروع التمكين الاقتصادي والتنمية المستدامة (SEED).

هدفت الورشة إلى التعريف بالمشروع، وأهدافه الرئيسية، ومنهجية تنفيذه، بالإضافة إلى معايير وآلية اختيار المشاركين والمزارعين المستفيدين.

كما شارك الحاضرون في نقاشات جماعية لتبادل الآراء والمقترحات حول منهجية تنفيذ المشروع ومعايير اختيار المزارعين.

وشكّل اللقاء خطوة مهمة نحو إطلاق المشروع وتعزيز التنسيق والتعاون مع الجهات المعنية في حلبجة.

A Story of Determination, Learning and Growth 🌟

In 2009, when Abdul Kareem was just 5 years old, he began receiving support through Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme. At the time, he was a primary school student in Baghdad with a strong commitment to his education.

Through the sponsorship, Abdul Kareem received support for essential educational needs, including school clothes and supplies. The assistance also helped his family meet other essential needs, including medicines when required.

Years later, Abdul Kareem’s dedication and determination have turned those opportunities into remarkable achievements.

🎓 In July 2026, he graduated from Al-Nahrain University, where he studied Automation and Artificial Intelligence, ranking third in his class for academic excellence. His graduation project, “Laura: AI-Enabled Military Tank,” reflected his passion for technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation.

Today, Abdul Kareem is working at Earthlink in Technical Support, within the field of IT Systems Administration, taking the next step toward his professional goals. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue his studies abroad, deepen his expertise, and one day establish his own company specializing in software solutions.

🌱 Working Together for Cleaner, Safer Communities

As part of the IR-Germany Project (Provision of Essential Humanitarian Assistance for Vulnerable Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Erbil Governorate, Iraq) the second round of community cleaning campaigns was successfully conducted across Hassan Sham U3, Hassan Sham U2, Khazer, and Dibaga IDP Camps.

The campaigns brought together 129 participants across the four camps, with 48 participants in Hassan Sham U3, 30 in Hassan Sham U2, 29 in Khazer, and 22 in Dibaga. Participants included representatives from camp management, NGOs, WASH Committees, Hygiene Promoters, workers, and community members.

Through these collective efforts, the campaigns aimed to promote shared responsibility for environmental cleanliness and encourage meaningful community participation in keeping shared spaces clean and well maintained.
Beyond cleaning the camp environment, these activities help strengthen community engagement, awareness, and ownership, contributing to a cleaner, safer, and healthier living environment for displaced families and the wider community.

🌟 Meet Hazhar Abdullah Rasool – MEAL Officer 📊

Hazhar Abdullah Rasool joined Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) Iraq as a MEAL Officer in February 2024. Since then, he has played an important role in strengthening MEAL, accountability, programme quality, learning, and evidence-based decision-making across IRW Iraq’s humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding programmes.

💡 One of Hazhar’s key achievements has been establishing the Complaints and Feedback Mechanism (CFM) from the ground up. He developed the procedures, tools, case management, referral, and reporting systems, helping strengthen how IRW listens to communities and responds to their feedback.

🛡️ Hazhar also serves as the JCAD Risk Assurance Champion, leading important quality and risk assurance improvements. Through his efforts, IRW Iraq’s Country Risk Assurance score increased from 32% of quality and 7% of implementation to 100% across both. 📈✅

📋 In addition, Hazhar has contributed to the development of the IRW Iraq Country Strategy 2026–2030, contributing proposal development, the Global Programmes & MEAL System (GPMS), and supports assessments, evaluations, data quality, learning, reporting, and staff capacity strengthening.

What motivates Hazhar most is using evidence, accountability, and learning to make programmes better. He believes MEAL is not simply about reporting or compliance—it is a strategic function that helps organisations listen to communities, identify gaps and risks, make informed decisions, adapt programmes, and ultimately create greater impact. 🌱

Empowering Young People with Digital & Technical Skills 👨‍💻🤖

As part of the “Empowering Youth with Market-Driven Digital Skills in Halabja Governorate, Iraq” project, supported by Islamic Relief Germany, an Arduino Training Course is being conducted at the Career Development Center (CDC) Hall in Halabja.

Running from 23–28 August 2026, the 6-day course is designed to introduce participants to the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence, robotics, electronics, programming, and Arduino technology.

Through a practical and hands-on approach, participants are learning how to:

🔹 Understand the fundamentals of AI, robotics, and electricity
🔹 Develop basic programming skills using C++
🔹 Work with Arduino boards and the Arduino IDE
🔹 Connect and program sensors such as LDR, ultrasonic, and temperature/humidity sensors
🔹 Build and troubleshoot electronic circuits
🔹 Develop practical Arduino projects and prototypes
🔹 Present and demonstrate their final projects

The training places a strong emphasis on learning by doing, enabling young people to transform theoretical knowledge into practical technical skills that can support innovation, further learning, and future employment opportunities.

Through market-driven digital and technical skills training, the project continues to support young people in Halabja Governorate to better prepare for an evolving labour market.

Strengthening Digital Accounting Skills for Future Employment 💻

As part of the “Empowering Youth with Market-Driven Digital Skills in Halabja Governorate, Iraq” project, the Uniform Electronic Accounting System (UEAS) Training was successfully conducted at Halabja Technical Institute from 9 - 16 August 2026.

The six-day training brought together 13 participants - 10 students and 3 teachers, including 10 Females and 3 Males participants. The training focused on practical learning and familiarising participants with UEAS and its application in accounting-related tasks.

Through this training, participants strengthened their digital accounting and software skills, gained practical knowledge relevant to their field of study, and enhanced their readiness for future employment opportunities.

The participation of teachers also contributes to the sustainability of the training by enabling them to share and further apply the knowledge gained with their students.

The project continues to work with educational institutions and young people to provide market-driven digital skills that respond to emerging labour market needs and support young people in their transition to employment. 🤝🌍

🌟 Meet Zana Fariq! – From Archiving Intern to HR/Admin Assistant 🌟

Today, we are pleased to introduce Zana Fariq and share a little about his inspiring journey with Islamic Relief Worldwide – Iraq. 💙

Zana started his journey with IRW Iraq in February 2024 as an Archiving Intern, initially joining us for a one-month internship. From the beginning, he showed a strong willingness to learn, take responsibility, and contribute to the team. 🤝🌱

Following his internship, an opportunity became available for an HR/Admin Assistant position based in the Halabja Field Office. Zana took the initiative to apply for the position and successfully went through the selection process.

What makes Zana's journey even more meaningful is that, at the time, the Halabja Field Office was newly established. This gave him the opportunity to be part of something from the very beginning and to play a tangible and important role in supporting the establishment and day-to-day operations of the office. 🏢✨

Working in a newly established field office comes with its own challenges and requires flexibility, initiative, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to changing needs. Zana embraced this opportunity and contributed across HR and administrative functions, helping support the smooth operation of the Halabja office and its staff. 💼🤝

With an academic background in Human Resources Management and Diplomacy & International Relations, Zana has a genuine passion for people development, employee engagement, and creating a positive and supportive workplace. 📚🌱

His journey from a one-month intern to taking on a key HR/Admin role in a newly established field office is a great example of how commitment, initiative, and willingness to learn can create opportunities for professional growth. 🚀
