The German-Iraqi Organization for Human Rights - Berlin (GIHO) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to defending human rights. The organization monitors the human rights actions of governments, regardless of their political orientations, geopolitical blocs, ethnicity, or religion. Its goals are to:
▪︎ Defend freedom of thought and expression.
▪︎ Striving for justice and equal legal protection, and building a strong civil society.
▪︎ Hold governments that violate human rights accountable.
The organization also seeks to gain the support of global public opinion and the international community as a whole to promote human rights for all people.
The organization's researchers conduct fact-finding investigations into human rights violations around the world, and then publish their findings in books and annual reports. These investigations are covered by local and international media and help embarrass governments that violate human rights before the world. The organization also provides up-to-date information on conflicts during times of crisis—such as refugee testimonies—to create public opinion and international response to wars around the world. The organization also addresses issues of international justice, corporate responsibility, academic freedom, prison conditions, refugee conditions, and environmental, water, and animal protection.
