Happy Newroz and Kurdish New Year 2725!
🔥عيد نوروز سعيد!

Newroz, one of the world’s oldest celebrations, has been observed for over 3,000 years by Kurds and many other cultures across the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond!

Meaning “New Day,” Newroz symbolizes freedom, resistance, and renewal.

In Kurdish mythology, Kawa the Blacksmith led a rebellion against the tyrant king Zahhak, bringing freedom to the people. Fires were lit on mountaintops to celebrate this victory— a tradition that lives on today.

Communities celebrating Newroz gather in nature, dance, and light fires to mark the triumph of light over darkness and welcome the arrival of spring.

Newroz Pîroz Be!

🗓️ On 19th January, ME-T hosted to screen the Sci-Fi Children of Men (2006).

This dystopian Sci-Fi film brought generations together to watch the film, discuss, and exchange ideas.

🌍 This screening was unique in bringing together multiple generations, ranging from individuals in their teens, 20s, and 30s to those in their 50s and 70s, to watch and discuss the film collectively. The discussion fostered a debate between generations about collective actions, current earth resources, immigration, and social implications.

🎨 We were delighted to host Mr. Walid Siti, a professional artist and co-founder of YACC. He shared his thoughts, saying, “This event is very important to me because I believe Duhok lacks diverse hubs that attract youth and bring them together for events focused on culture. We need to create opportunities for young people to exchange ideas, engage in cultural expressions, and foster new collaborations, ideas, and developments.”

❓ One of the most thought-provoking questions raised by attendees was: “What causes people to immigrate from their country to another, and what parallels can be drawn between this and the film’s portrayal of immigration and xenophobia?”

🎥 Many noted how the film’s portrayal of a near-future dystopia felt chillingly realistic, sparking conversations about how current trends could lead to similar outcomes if left unaddressed.

💭 During the discussion, one of the attendees shared, “The movie isn’t just about the future; it mirrors our present. It’s a warning, but also a plea for humanity to act before it’s too late.”

🤔 What are your thoughts on the Children of Men film?
How close are we to the dystopian world it portrayed?
