The Sumerian city of Eridu is considered one of the oldest cities in human history, emerging in southern Mesopotamia more than 7,000 years ago. The Sumerians regarded it as the first city bestowed upon them by the gods. It became an important religious center dedicated to Enki, the god of wisdom and fresh waters. From its temples emerged some of the earliest foundations of civilization, contributing to the development of settled life, agriculture, and social organization in Mesopotamia.
