✝️ CHALDEAN BISHOP MOSES — FROM BATNAYA TO THE HEART OF BAGHDAD ✝️
🌟 A Chaldean story of faith, courage, service, and heritage
Today we remember Bishop Qaryaqos Mousis (Bishop Moses), a Chaldean bishop whose story connects the historic Chaldean village of Batnaya in the Ninewa Plain with the heart of the Chaldean community in Baghdad. 💙❤️💛
🏘️ ROOTED IN BATNAYA
Bishop Moses came from a Chaldean family of Batnaya, one of the historic Chaldean Christian villages of the Ninewa Plain. His roots were formed in a community where the Chaldean church, family, faith, and Chaldean heritage were deeply intertwined. ✝️🌿
Batnaya was more than his ancestral Chaldean village—it represented the Chaldean heritage and traditions he carried throughout his life of service.
⛪ THE ROAD TO THE PRIESTHOOD
His journey toward the priesthood took him to the Patriarchal Seminary in Mosul, where he received his religious formation and prepared for a life dedicated to the Chaldean Church.
🇻🇦 In 1946, he was sent to Rome for further studies, strengthening the theological and spiritual foundation that would guide his ministry.
🇮🇶 In 1950, he returned to Iraq and moved to Baghdad, beginning the chapter of his life for which generations of Chaldeans would remember him.
🏛️ OUR LADY OF SORROWS — BAGHDAD
Bishop Moses became closely associated with the historic Chaldean Cathedral of Our Lady of Sorrows in Baghdad.
For generations, this church has stood at the center of Chaldean Christian life in the Iraqi capital. It was here that Bishop Moses served his people, celebrated their faith, shared their struggles, and became remembered as a strong defender of his Church and community. 🙏
💪 WHY WAS HE CALLED “ANTAR”?
Among Baghdad’s Chaldeans, he became popularly remembered by the nickname “Antar.”
According to Chaldean community memory, the name reflected his reputation for strength, courage, dignity, and his determination to defend his Church and its faithful. Stories about his bold personality continued to be passed from one generation to another.
Some of these stories belong to oral community tradition and should be distinguished from details documented in official church records—but the survival of those stories itself demonstrates the impression he left upon the people who knew him. 🕯️
⛪ FROM PRIEST TO BISHOP
📜 1967 — He was consecrated a Chaldean bishop at Our Lady of Sorrows Cathedral in Baghdad.
✝️ 1968 — He became Bishop of the Chaldean Eparchy of Al-Amadiya, continuing his service to the Chaldean Church at a higher pastoral responsibility.
🕯️ 16 April 1973 — Bishop Moses passed away, bringing to an end a relatively short life but leaving behind a memory that survived for generations.
