وقّعت منظمة الأغذية والزراعة للأمم المتحدة (الفاو) و وزارة الزراعة العراقية والصندوق الدولي للتنمية الزراعية (إيفاد) مبادرة جديدة بقيمة 6.6 مليون دولار أمريكي لدعم صغار المزارعين الأكثر هشاشة وتعزيز الزراعة القادرة على الصمود أمام التغير المناخي في جنوب العراق.

وسيسهم المشروع في تحسين سبل العيش والإنتاجية وتعزيز الفرص التسويقية.

استناداً إلى التدخلات الناجحة التي دعمتها الفاو في مختلف أنحاء العراق، ستسهم هذه المبادرة في توسيع الحلول الزراعية الذكية مناخياً، وتعزيز خدمات الإرشاد الزراعي، ودعم النساء والشباب في المناطق الريفية من خلال فرص زراعية أكثر شمولاً.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , the Ministry of Agriculture and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) signed a new USD 6.6 million initiative to support vulnerable smallholder farmers and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture in southern Iraq.
The project will help improve livelihoods, productivity and market opportunities.

Building on successful FAO-supported interventions across Iraq, the initiative will expand climate-smart solutions, strengthen extension services and support rural women and youth through more inclusive agricultural opportunities.

🚨 عُقد اليوم اجتماع طارئ ترأسه الوكيل الفني لوزارة الزراعة، ميثاق الخفاجي، بحضور ممثل منظمة الفاو صلاح الحاج حسن، وبمشاركة شركاء الأمم المتحدة، والسفارات، والجهات الوطنية والدولية المعنية، لبحث أثر الوضع الراهن في المنطقة على القطاع الزراعي والأمن الغذائي في العراق 🇮🇶🌾.
📊 واستعرضت الفاو وبرنامج الأغذية العالمي أبرز ما جاء في ورقة التحليل التي أعدّتها المنظمتان بشأن أثر هذا الوضع على الزراعة والأمن الغذائي في العراق حتى اليوم، إلى جانب خيارات الاستجابة، والأدوات، والإجراءات ذات الأولوية، دعماً للنقاشات السياساتية مع حكومة العراق، والمساهمة في حماية إمدادات الغذاء والأعلاف والمدخلات الزراعية وسبل العيش 🚜🌾🍞.
🤝 وأكد المشاركون التزامهم بمواصلة تقديم الدعم الفني، وتوفير أدوات الرصد المنتظمة، ومتابعة تنفيذ التوصيات التي خلص إليها الاجتماع لتعزيز التعاون بين الجهات الدولية والوزارة، ولا سيما في ما يتعلق برصد الأسعار ودعم استقرارها، بما يعزز القدرة على الصمود 📈🛡️.

🚨 An urgent meeting was held today, chaired by the Technical Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mithaq Al-Khafaji, in the presence of FAO Representative Salah El Hajj Hassan, and with the participation of UN partners, embassies, and national and international stakeholders, to discuss the impact of the current regional situation on Iraq’s agricultural sector and food security 🇮🇶🌾.

📊 FAO and WFP presented the key findings of the joint analysis note prepared by the two organizations on the impact of the current situation on agriculture and food security in Iraq to date, alongside response options, tools, and priority actions to support policy discussions with the Government of Iraq and help safeguard food supplies, feed, agricultural inputs, and livelihoods 🚜🌾🍞.

🤝 Participants reaffirmed their commitment to continue providing technical support, regular monitoring tools, and follow-up on the recommendations emerging from the meeting to strengthen cooperation between international stakeholders and the Ministry, particularly regarding price monitoring and supporting market stability, thereby enhancing resilience 📈🛡️.

أطلقت منظمة الأغذية و الزراعة في العراق، بالتعاون مع هيئة الإحصاء ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية التابعة لوزارة التخطيط 🇮🇶، تدريباً لمدة ثلاثة أيام حول رسم خرائط المحاصيل باستخدام تقنيات الاستشعار عن بُعد، ضمن مشروع في مرحلته الثانية.
جمع التدريب مشاركون من وزارة الزراعة، ووزارة الموارد المائية، ووزارة البيئة، ومؤسسات إقليم كردستان، وهيئة الإحصاء ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية، لتعزيز مهاراتهم في رسم خرائط المحاصيل واستخدام البيانات لدعم القطاع الزراعي. 🤝🇮🇶🌱
اختُتمت الورشة بتنفيذ تمارين التحقق، وإعداد الخرائط النهائية، وعروض المشاركين. 🗺️📍

Better data, better decisions.
FAO Iraq, with the Commission of Statistics and Geographic Information Systems (CSGIS), Ministry of Planning 🇮🇶, launched a 3-day training on crop mapping through remote sensing under Phase II.

Participants from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment, Kurdistan Region institutions and CSGIS came together to strengthen skills in crop mapping and data use for agriculture. 🤝🇮🇶🌱
The workshop concluded with validation exercises, final map outputs and participant presentations. 🗺️📍

FAO Representative in Iraq, Salah El Hajj Hassan, and the Head of CSGIS, Dr Dhia Awad Kadhim, delivered certificates to participants, marking the successful completion of the training. 🤝🎓
Through , FAO and national partners continue supporting evidence-based decisions for more efficient land and water use across Iraq. 🌾💧

عقب الزيارة الميدانية، التقى ممثل منظمة الفاو والمنسق المقيم للأمم المتحدة بالعراق بمحافظ السليمانية السيد هفال أبو بكر لبحث الأنشطة القادمة للمشروع، ومجالات التنسيق،وأهمية تعزيز التعاون.
وأكد المحافظ التزام السلطات المحلية بدعم التنفيذ الفعّال للمشروع وتعظيم أثره.

Following the field visit, FAO Iraq Representative, Salah el Hajj Hassan, and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Isaczai, met with the Governor of Sulaymaniyah, Mr. Haval Abubakir, to discuss upcoming project activities, areas of coordination, and the importance of strengthening cooperation.
The governor reaffirmed local authorities commitment to supporting effective implementation of the project interventions and maximizing impact.

في سياق إطلاق مشاريع جديدة لمنظمة الفاو، نُظّمت زيارة ميدانية رفيعة المستوى إلى قرية بيستان سور، ناحية عربت (السليمانية)، بمشاركة ممثل منظمة الأغذية و الزراعة للأمم المتحدة (الفاو)، صلاح الحاج حسن والمنسق المقيم للأمم المتحدة في العراق، غلام محمد إسحق زاي، و السادة قائم مقام السليمانية، ونائب مدير الزراعة.
وجمعت الزيارة السلطات المحلية والشركاء والمزارعين في نقاشات مباشرة حول الأولويات والاحتياجات.

شارك في هذه النقاشات مزارعون، من بينهم مجموعات نسوية، إلى جانب مربّي الأبقار ومنتجي الألبان، حيث تم التركيز على تعزيز إنتاج الحليب وتصنيعه وتحسين الوصول إلى الأسواق.

وتهدف هذه الجهود إلى دعم نظم زراعية أكثر صمودًا وشمولًا وتوجّهًا نحو السوق.

Ahead of the launch of new Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) projects, a high-level field visit was organized to Bistan Sur village, Arbat sub-district (Sulaymaniyah), with the participation of FAO Representative in Iraq, Dr. Salah El Hajj Hassan, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Isaczai , Sulaymaniyah District Commissioner, and Deputy Director of Agriculture.

The visit brought together local authorities, partners, and farmers for direct discussions on priorities and needs.

Farmers, including women’s groups, alongside cattle breeders and dairy producers, took part in discussions on strengthening milk production, processing, and market access.

These efforts aim to support more resilient, inclusive, and market-oriented agricultural systems.

التقى ممثل منظمة الأغذية والزراعة للأمم المتحدة في العراق صلاح الحاج حسن وفريقه مع السلطات المحلية والجهات الزراعية في مركز النشئ الريفي بناحية الحرية في محافظة النجف، لبحث تعزيز ممارسات زراعية ذكية مناخياً في زراعة الشلب 🌾🇮🇶
وشهد اللقاء حضور مدير زراعة النجف، وإدارة المركز، ورئيس اتحاد الجمعيات الفلاحية، إلى جانب الكوادر الفنية.
ركزت المناقشات على تعزيز إنتاج الشلب، وتحسين كفاءة الري، ودعم سبل عيش المزارعين.
ويأتي ذلك ضمن المشروع الممول من الحكومة الكندية، ويجري تنفيذه بالتعاون مع وزارة الزراعة العراقية ، في عدة مواقع ضمن محافظات النجف وذي قار وكربلاء والمثنى.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Iraq Representative Salah el Hajj Hassan and team met with local authorities and agricultural stakeholders at Al-Nashaa Al-Rifi Center in Al-Hurriya subdistrict, Najaf, to advance climate-smart agricultural practices in rice cultivation 🌾🇮🇶

The meeting was attended by the Director of Agriculture in Najaf, the Center’s management, the Head of Farmers’ Associations Union, and technical teams.

Discussions focused on boosting rice production, improving irrigation efficiency, and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

This comes under the Canada in Iraq funded project , implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture across several locations in Najaf, Thi Qar, Karbala and Muthanna.
