Our Story

I. Between its Construction and the British Occupation

It is believed that after construction, Yaseen Al Khedairy used the mention as a guest house, and a place of entertainment and music. The precise date of construction is unknown, however it is currently believed to be between 1904 and 1908.

II. Between the Early-Twenties and Late-Forties

As a result of Yaseen Al Khedairy’s resistance, and rejection to co-operate with the new occupiers, he was imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to death by the British. Then, after General Stanley Maude’s death (by Cholera in November 2017), the sentence was reduced o Exile to India. He returned to Iraq after the establishment of the British civil rule, before the crowning of King Faisal the 1st. He lived in one of the mansions that he built in the East Gate area, where the current owner of Al Beit Al Iraqi was born and raised. During the period between the early thirties and late forties He leased the mansion that was to become later Al Beit Al Iraqi to one of the first British Archeologists specializing in the Near East, the late Professor Seton Lloyd, and his wife Heidi, an artist who taught sculpture in the Institute of Fine Arts in Iraq.
