Mercy Hands for Humanitarian Aid

Mercy Hands for Humanitarian Aid A humanitarian nonprofit organization, based in Baghdad, Iraq. A recognized partner of UN agencies an Mercy Hands was founded by Dr. Khaldoon Al-Moosawi in 2004.

The history of Mercy Hands is a story of courage, determination, and commitment to helping people in need. In the aftermath of the attack on UN Headquarters in Baghdad and the subsequent targeting of international aid workers, most of the international aid workers had to leave the country and majority of the international aid organizations either pulled out or reduced activities. This situation cr

eated a huge gap in the humanitarian context in Iraq at a time humanitarian needs in Iraq were growing mainly as a result of military operations and continuous waves of displacement. Two Iraqi medical doctors, who had only one year experience in the humanitarian field, responded voluntarily to the situation by creating a local non governmental humanitarian organization. With a great will, a lot of determination and courage, and self commitment to help people in need, the two doctors succeeded to recruit staff and secure donation for the organization’s first humanitarian intervention. With the same determination and a clear vision, Mercy Hands has grown from a small local NGO to a nationwide organization that has many satellite offices and a regional office in Amman, Jordan.

🧠 Working Together for Better Mental Health Support in Anbar

For returnees and displaced communities, recovery is not only about rebuilding homes and livelihoods, but also about rebuilding a sense of safety, stability and wellbeing.

Mercy Hands initiated this working group to bring together relevant stakeholders, strengthen coordination, improve communication around referrals and build a more accessible and trusted mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) system in Anbar.

This monthly discussion focused on how we can make sure that people who need MHPSS support can find the right service, access it safely and receive appropriate follow-up.

Governmental services, Community Police, psychologists, university professionals, NGOs, VTC, Youth and Sport Center and other local actors came together to discuss the current referral system in Fallujah, identifying existing gaps and challenges.

Participants shared the challenges they face, including stigma and social norms, limited specialized mental health services, lack of safe spaces, economic dependence, and gaps in coordination and trust between actors.

Thank you to all participants for bringing their experience and perspectives to the discussion. We look forward to the next working group in August, focusing on developing a unified protection referral pathway. 🤝

📍 Behind the scenes of our activities in Fallujah

Behind every activity, there is a team making sure everything comes together, and our visit to Fallujah was a great opportunity to see that work up close.

During the vocational training, the Mercy Hands Baghdad team visited Fallujah to follow up on the activities, meet with the field team and visit the businesses who received a grant.

It was also a chance to sit together, discuss what is working, what could be improved, and simply spend more time with our beneficiaries to understand their concerns. Of course, a good atmosphere, great teamwork and plenty of positive energy made the visit even better (you can see it in our smiles) !

We were also happy to see the strong coordination with the Youth and Sport Center of Fallujah, the trainers, and local authorities. Without their support, this activity could not have been possible !

As we reach the halfway point of the project, it is particularly rewarding to see the progress made and to witness our beneficiaries grow in confidence throughout the activities.

🌸✨ Another location, another group of motivated participants ! ✨🌸

Mercy Hands, in partnership with Action Against Hunger (ACF) organized a 20 days vocational training in Al-Qaim. 25 participants took part in beauty salon skills and handicrafts, gaining practical skills in a context where finding stable employment and income opportunities can be particularly challenging !

♻️ For participants facing significant economic vulnerability, starting a new activity can be difficult when even basic materials require an investment. That is why the handicrafts training focused on using recycled and everyday items. By turning materials that are often considered waste into creative and useful products, participants can learn a skill that requires little initial investment, making it more accessible for those with limited financial resources. 🌱

And the commitment was incredible! All 25 participants completed the training with zero dropouts!

The sessions were filled with creativity, motivation and social connection, giving participants the opportunity to learn together, share ideas and discover their own strengths. 🤝

A big thank you to the VTC in Al-Qaim and to our dedicated trainers for making these sessions possible!

🌸✨ Skills, creativity & new opportunities in Fallujah! ✨🌸

July was all about learning, creating and connecting in Fallujah! 💪

Mercy Hands, in partnership with Action Against Hunger (ACF) organized a 20 days vocational training where 50 amazing participants across Fallujah and Al Qaim joined hands-on training in beauty salon skills and handicrafts giving women and young people more options to build skills, explore new opportunities and turn their creativity into something meaningful.

♻️ The handicrafts training had an extra creative dimension: recycling! Participants learned how to transform everyday materials into creative and useful products. This makes handicraft activities accessible and low-cost, while encouraging participants to reuse materials that might otherwise become waste and promoting greater environmental awareness. 🌱

And the best part? Zero dropouts! All 50 participants completed the training, bringing incredible motivation, energy and creativity to every session.

From creative ideas and new skills to friendships, social connections and plenty of motivation, the training was also a chance to bring people together. ✨

A big thank you to the Youth and Sport Center of Fallujah and to the trainers 🙏

💙 World Humanitarian Day 💙

On 19 August 2003, Iraq lost twenty-two humanitarians in an attack on the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad. Since then, the United Nations has marked this date as the World Humanitarian Day, in memory of those lives, and in recognition of every aid worker who risks their own to serve others.

Twenty-two years ago, in the aftermath of that attack and as many international organizations were leaving Iraq, Mercy Hands was founded as a small local NGO in Baghdad. It grew gradually from a local beginning into a national organization serving communities across more than fifteen governorates.

This day reminds us why that work matters. We honour the 22 lives lost in 2003 and the humanitarians who stayed and built, and every aid worker carrying this mission forward today.
