Dance workshop, post 3 of 3

The Balmitras were attending the dance workshop every day for a couple of hours, for 5 days.
They were happy to perform the traditional song, which you must have seen already. But they also wanted to perform a popular ‘koli’ song. Soha Karyekar followed the same strategy. The boys (and a few girls) picked the song, the steps, and she helped them align everything.

Then, she gave them a rhythm pattern with several changeovers, and helped them choose the steps. All of them displayed an innate sense of rhythm. All they had to do was be in sync. One of them became a leader and called out the change. The rest followed.

“The dance workshop helped us relieve the stress of daily routine. Instead of making free movements, we learnt to pay attention to the steps and coordination,” says Niket.

“We were able to use our creativity while choreographing the songs. It gave us confidence and helped us appreciate the meaning of team work,” says Sanket Kathole.

All in all, the workshop was a great stress-buster for everyone, and they are asking for more!!

Dance workshop, post 2 of 3

For a couple of days, the TMRE fellows and the team from Amravati, who are not from the local area, and have no background of dance, attended the dance workshop. To make their lives easy, selected a simple Marathi bhavgeet. The group was able to decide the steps on their own, based on the lyrics. In the sweltering heat, they practiced, and performed.

"Do you dance?” asked , the Kathak dancer who came to conduct a dance workshop.
“Ummm…. Yes, we dance at weddings,” some Balmitras replied shyly.

They were quite unsure of what this young woman would teach them - some classical dance with difficult steps, maybe? But Soha turned the tables. “You show me your dance. Let’s prepare a performance with the steps you know,” she said.

This was quite easy. One Balmitra sat down with a dholak, another with the jhanjha (majira) and they started dancing in a circle – the typical formation of all folk dances.

Soha helped them get their movements in sync. And they were all ready for a performance!

Their energy was unbelievable!

Enjoy the video ! And stay tuned for more videos of other dances soon.

We read aloud books in the class quite often. We sing songs with children. We conduct group games. We engage the children in painting or origami.
How to make these more exciting for children? Are there any techniques from theatre that can be used? Can we combine reading, drawing and singing to achieve a total experience of storytelling?

Renowned theatre person Shaili Sathyu conducted a 3-day workshop with project leaders of QUEST. With her help and guidance, all the participants challenged themselves to think afresh and to work differently with the same material.

They will go back for the new semester in June, armed with a whole new skill set for their classroom work!

Groups of QUESTians are spending 2 hours daily to learn pottery! This serves as a good break from the theory-and-practical routine. What's more, they are enjoying getting their hands dirty!!

Raju Prajapati and Kishor Tayade have come all the way from Amravati to Sonale, armed with their pottery wheel and lots of clay.

"It is difficult to give shape to the clay... We don't know how much pressure to apply," says Project Leader Sameer Mhaskar. "But the experts are helping us at every stage. They show us how to pinch the fingers at the right time as the clay is moving on the wheel," he adds.

Everybody has successfully managed to make small diyas!! The other fancy mugs and bowls and pots that you see in the video have been made with the experts' support!

The entire team of QUEST is in Sonale this month. The old and new educational centres of QUEST are buzzing with activity. The team has converged to attend various capacity building sessions.
What are they learning?
The month-long package includes theoretical inputs on pedagogy which will help them in their work, sessions on QUEST's policies and practices etc.
It also includes a few days of theatre training, a session on pottery, and a workshop on dance for children and Balmitras.

We will bring you glimpses of the sessions as they happen.

Here are some photos from a session on 'POSH', conducted by QUEST's legal advisor, Shachee Shah Jagtap. She explained the nuances of sexual harassment at workplace through cases and incidents. The new coordinators and fellows of QUEST engaged in discussions to understand the law.

It was a pleasure to have the LFE team in Sonale for 10 days last month. The workshop conducted by QUEST included theoretical inputs on language (Marathi) and math; as well as practical experience in schools / QUEST centres.
QUEST's resource persons covered how to teach concepts such as multiplication, division, geners of writing like advertisement, news etc.
The LFE team members braved the heat and tried their best to put into practice what they were learning.
We are happy to see from this post that the workshop has made an impact and we hope the learning will continue!
