Friends of Vrindavan

Friends of Vrindavan Serving the ecology, heritage and culture of Braj-Vrindavan The Friends of Vrindavan (FoV-India) was founded in 1997.

Its founders felt that the ecological heritage of Braj, represented by the groves, Yamuna and the sacred-raj (dust) of Vrindavan is in great danger and desired to serve this sacred land by taking some concrete steps. The FoV dedicates its services for environment, with focus on conserving the ecological and cultural heritage of the Braj region focusing on Vrindavan. It mixes traditional methods a

nd modern technology to sustain shared natural resources of Braj, the holy abode of the Divine Couple Sri Radha Krishna. Vrindavan is literally losing its ground to garbage, ruthless cutting of trees and in their place mindless concrete jungle emerging all over. There is an utmost need for preserving the swarupa (ambience) of this holy Dhama. FoV has grown into a community enterprise, an enviro-regeneration and care based initiative, in tune with the spiritual values and the cultural traditions of Vrindavan. FoV has undertaken various community-based projects to realize its vision of a Vrindavan that is eco-friendly and sustainable. Successful partnerships with the local community and various national and international organizations and institutions have allowed us to increase the impact of these initiatives. It has been at the forefront of many struggles for conserving the pilgrimage town of Vrindavan, specially sanitation, restoring river Yamuna back to the ancient ghats, plantation, water harvesting and other heritage conservation measures. The projects run by Friends of Vrindavan benefitted the marginalized sections of the community and other vulnerable groups, by finding them the job opportunities, while serving the sacred land to maintain its sanctity. It has been working vigorously to find effective solutions to keep Braj-Vrindavan’s essence alive for the future generations. FoV has facilitated community platforms for discussions and peaceful resolution of issues related to environmental conflicts.

Saved another tree.

This tree too had struggled hard for its life. It was knocked down by a vehicle and lay fallen on the ground. However, since a part of its root remained embedded in the soil, it managed to stay alive. We helped it stand again by repairing its trunk by making an enclosure around it.

The Municipal Corporation provided us with old tiles to build a protective enclosure around it.

On the sacred day of Pitri Amavasya, we planted trees on the bank of Sangam Kund in Khadirvan as a humble tribute to our ancestors. This marks Friends of Vrindavan's third such effort, as we had earlier planted trees here on two occasions. May these trees grow strong, offering shade, beauty, and sanctity to the holy environs of Braj. We have also employed a person to take care of these trees.

Our supporter Shri Navneet Agrawal Ji made a truly commendable resolve on the auspicious occasion of his birthday. Rising above material gifts and formalities, he planted a Kadamba and a Tamal tree in the sacred land of Vrindavan.

In Braj tradition, these trees are not just part of nature but are living symbols of Shri Krishna’s divine pastimes.

Under the shade of the Kadamba tree, Nandalal played joyfully with His cowherd friends.

The dark trunk of the Tamal tree forever reminds the Brajvasis of the enchanting beauty of Shyamasundar.

This act of tree plantation not only carries a powerful message of environmental preservation but also serves as a unique way to keep alive the spiritual culture and heritage of Braj.

We all extend our heartfelt birthday wishes to Navneet Ji and deeply appreciate this inspiring service.

Planting trees on the banks of the kunds help reduce erosion, improve water quality by filtering pollutants, support biodiversity, and contribute to groundwater recharge. The root systems stabilize the soil, while the foliage intercepts rainwater runoff.
We planted ten more trees on the bank of the Sangam Kund in Khadirvan. Shri Daivishakti Dasi Mataji launched today's drive by planting the first tree. She is a disciple of Iskcon's Founder Acharya His Divine Grace Shrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Shri Yadavpati Das Brahmachari, the Assistant Head pujari of Shri Krishna Balaram Temple, Iskcon Vrindavan also joined us in the drive.

Saving trees are more important than planting the new ones. This tree was uprooted and fell down a couple of days back due to heavy rain. Today with the help of the earthmover of Municipal Corporation of Mathura -Vrindavan, we transplanted it after digging a deeper pit. Hope it will survive.

Nupur Chitalia, an Indian-Canadian filmmaker based in Toronto visited our office today. She is working on a global documentary series, Jātrā: The Journey Within. The Indian episode is called River Worshipping in India: From Rituals to Reconnection

Our discussion has been about how devotion can include preservation of our Yamuna Ji and other river mothers and Goddesses. FoV will assist her in documenting the plight of Yamuna in Braj and help her interviewing the stake holders.

Planting trees is a rewarding and meaningful activity, especially on a lake bank, as it contributes to environmental health, provides resources for future generations, and creates a sense of fulfillment and legacy for the planter. Our religious texts, specifically highlights the immense merit and unending fruit gained from planting trees near water bodies like lakes and tanks.
We have planted eleven trees today at the bank of the Kund at Khadir Van, where Shri Krishna killed the demon Bakasura. We have a target of planting 101 trees there. Several prominent brajwasis from the area including Brajacharya Goswami Shri Krishnanand Bhatt, Shri Harishchand Goswami, Shri Keshav Dev Goswami, Acharya Bhagvat Swaroop Sharma etc. planted the trees.
