In September 2024, a new chapter began at the Police Boys and Girls Club (PBGC) in Arumbakkam. A group of 34 students joined the first batch of ICT classes, launched in partnership with HCLFoundation and Dbai Salem. The goal was simple yet impactful: to give children access to digital learning and help them use technology with confidence and creativity.

The enthusiastic response encouraged us to grow. A second batch of 34 students enrolled at Arumbakkam, and we expanded to Kanagi Nagar, where 20 more students joined. Today, 88 children across both centers are part of this exciting journey.

The two batches at Arumbakkam have now completed their training, and each child received a completion certificateโ€”marking their progress and dedication.

These classes were about more than just learning to use a computer. We began with assessments to understand each studentโ€™s starting point and track their growth. From there, students explored a wide range of toolsโ€”LibreOffice for documents and presentations, creative apps like Tux Paint, Scratch, and KTurtle, and educational tools for math, science, and geography. They even worked with multimedia programs like GIMP, OpenShot, and Audacity to edit images, videos, and audio.

For many, the sessions became a space to explore, build, and express. Watching them grow from hesitant beginners to confident creators was deeply rewarding.

None of this would have been possible without the support of HCL Foundation and DBAI. Their commitment to meaningful learning has opened new doors for these young learners.

If this story resonated with you, join us in expanding the reach of digital education across government schools in India.

Jyoti Patel is a Vidya Saathi with ILP from a humble farming family in Varanasi. In July 2024, she stepped into the role of a Vidya Saathi that would shape not just the children she taught, but her own journey as well.

Her mission was to uplift the Musahar community, a group long denied access to education. Before setting up a Village Learning Centre (VLC), she walked through their strugglesโ€”listening, learning, and building trust. The reality was grim: out of 45 families, only 25 children could even consider schooling. The local school, just two kilometres away, felt worlds apartโ€”caste-based harassment turned its gates into barriers the children dared not cross.

Jyoti refused to let fear dictate their future. She didnโ€™t just teach; she protected. She walked the children to school, shielded them from bullying, and made sure they arrived with dignityโ€”hair combed, uniforms neat, heads held high. She stood beside parents, raising their voices in school meetings, demanding a right that should never have been a privilege.

Her impact went beyond the classroom. She turned simple materials into powerful learning tools, making education engaging and joyful. Teachers took notice. The school environment began to shift. And most importantly, the Musahar children started believing they belonged.

Today, Jyotiโ€™s efforts have not only brought children into school but have sparked a movement. A second batch is now ready to begin their journeyโ€”proof that change, once set in motion, cannot be stopped.

If you believe every child deserves the chance to learn and thrive, connect with the ILP team to make education accessible for all.
