Laya LAYA is a Resource Centre for Adivasis. Our working areas are in the Visakhapatnam and East Godavari

Laya’s journey began in 1985, when the current directors set foot in a remote adivasi area of East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. Ever since, the Laya team has traversed a long and winding road, parts of which were arduous and parts that were comfortable to tread. However, the path taken has been full of lessons learnt along the route and the way forward has always been exciting…
Over time,

our involvement comprises various phases of engagement:
The years 1984 to 1989 could be considered as the first phase, during which the entire Laya team was based at Addateegala, East Godavari District. The initial learning of the world-view of the adivasi communities came from day to day interactions with the local representatives. We began to understand the nature of the symbiotic relationship of land and the well-being of adivasis. Laya has been involved in identifying issues of concern for local communities, such as:
-Learning and responding to issues of land alienation
-Access to forests
-Depletion of water resources
-Lack of access to government programs
-Issues related to agricultural credit
-Lack of access to education

The second phase, between 1989-1995, saw Laya being independently registered as a society. It was at this time that the Laya Resource Center was established at Visakhapatnam. Various initiatives and concepts were developed during these years:
-Evolution of the youth agenda
-Alternative education processes
-Engagement in herbal based health care
-Exploration of a field base in the remote adivasi belt in Visakhapatnam district
-Campaign on displacement along a major river belt in the Eastern Ghats
-Introduction of the decentralization process in the management of various Laya program initiatives. Post 1995, the third phase, Laya was registered under the Foreign Contribution and Regulation Act. This registration made it relatively easier to access resource support from external agencies based outside the country. In the process, we developed systems of management and governance mechanisms and systematic intervention strategies through the unit approach. Today, the units are the backbone of the structural growth of the Laya Resource Center and they embody an effective decentralization process. The key units comprise of:
-Resource for Legal Action
-Herbal Based Health Care
-Natural Resource Management
-Climate Change along with renewable and decentralized energy options
-Youth and Women’s Empowerment
-Alternative documentation, Networking and campaigns

The Directors of Laya focus on linking micro concerns with macro issues; on networking and resource raising measures. An unintentional involvement of one of the Directors with climate issues in 1993 has now led to a full-fledged involvement of Laya Resource with climate change concerns, nationally and internationally. Laya Resource Center acts as the secretariat of INECC, of which it is a founder member and the Executive Director, its Convener. Journeying through years of experience, Laya Resource Center is now grappling with conceptualization and engagement of ‘education for sustainable development goals’ in the context of a paradigm shift of development concerns. Laya is also promoting meaningful interventions which are related to social enterprise as part of its efforts towards becoming increasingly sustainable in the years to come.

In Loving Memory: A Legacy of Love and Social Justice

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Nafisa Goga D'Souza (September 11, 1950 – 13 January 2025), a visionary leader, beloved mentor, and tireless advocate for social justice and climate justice. Her departure, following the recent loss of her cherished husband Dominic D'Souza (passed January 2, 2025), marks the end of an extraordinary partnership that transformed countless lives through their shared dedication to social work, climate action, and environmental justice.

Nafisa's remarkable journey began at the University of Bombay, where she earned her Bachelor's in Economics and Political Science (1972) and Master's in Social Work (1974). Her pursuit of knowledge culminated in a Ph.D. in Social Work from Andhra University (2001), but it was her heart for service that truly defined her legacy.

As the founding Executive Director of LAYA Resource Centre since 1989, Nafisa worked tirelessly to empower indigenous communities and promote sustainable development. Her vision of social justice was inseparable from environmental stewardship, leading her to co-found the Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change (INECC). Her work touched lives from tribal villages in Andhra Pradesh to international climate conferences, always advocating for those whose voices often went unheard.

The love story of Nafisa and Dominic D'Souza was one of shared purpose and profound dedication to social justice. Together, they founded LAYA, meaning "rhythm," embodying their belief in the harmonious relationship between communities and nature. Their partnership extended beyond marriage – it was a powerful alliance in the fight for environmental justice, lifelong learning, indigenous rights, and sustainable development.

Dominic's passing on January 2nd, 2025, left a void in both the social justice community and Nafisa's heart. Their reunion, just days apart, speaks to the depth of their connection and shared life mission. Together, they leave behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, activism, and unwavering commitment to social transformation.

They are survived by their two children, Siddharth and Karuna, who witnessed their parents' dedication to creating a more equitable and sustainable world. The D'Souza family's impact on social and environmental justice will continue to inspire future generations through the countless lives they touched and the institutions they built.

Nafisa and Dominic's work through LAYA and INECC stands as a testament to their belief that positive change begins at the grassroots level. Their vision of development that honors both human dignity and environmental sustainability continues to guide organizations and activists worldwide.

Those wishing to honor their memory are encouraged to support the causes they held dear: indigenous rights, lifelong learning, climate justice, and sustainable development. Their life's work reminds us that love, when directed toward the service of others, has the power to transform communities and protect our planet for future generations.

May their both rest in power, and may their legacy of love and service continue to inspire us all.
