VCDS is a non-profit, non-governmental, non-religious, secular organisation started to work for the upliftment of economically poor and marginalised dalits especially women, children and youth. The organisation was started by a group of young graduates who suffered by the oppression and suppression of the caste system and government. The journey of VCDS started in the year 1980 with fighting for t

he rights of the unorganised labourers working in the salt field, stone quarries, farm lands, scavengers, drummers, washermen etc as bonded labourers. Along with this women's freedom and empowerment through education was emphasised and free education was given to the working rural women through evening schools.Navajothi Women's Gram Bank was started for the single & destitute women to bring economic stability and independence in the year 1983 & 1200 women became the member from 60 villages. In the year 1987 the differently challenged children of our working villages were chosen and they were given with medical support, special aids like cycles, clutches, callipers, shoes, hearing aids etc and they were also sent to schools to get education. The parents of these children were given counselling and training on special children care. In 2009 VCDS started Eco-Tourism to promote environment friendly tourism to the local and international travelers which will also explain about the culture, heritage and social setup and customs of India. This also helped to protect the livelihood resources of the rural artisans and craftsmen. VCDS has been engaged in giving trainings to the young dalit boys and girls on citizenship, leadership, democracy, rights and equality from the beginning. VCDS also has its own cultural team which promotes tamil folk arts and this folk art is used to spread awareness among the rural people on health, education, child rights and human rights, environment protection etc. VCDS also receives volunteers and students from different countries to study about the life of rural people under "Changing South" in south India especially in tamil nadu.
