Banaras Convention ‘Banaras Convention’ for a comprehensive, medley, plural and inclusive culture.

दुनिया के प्राचीनतम शहरों में एक बनारस/वाराणसी/काशी विभिन्न विचार धाराओं, धर्मों के साथ दुनिया भर में आकषर्ण का प्रतीक रहा है। जहां यह हिन्दूओं का पवित्र शहर है। वहीं महात्मा बुद्ध के प्रथम उपदेश (धर्म चक्र प्रवर्तन) के लिए बौद्ध धर्मावलम्बियों का प्रमुख केन्द्र भी है। जैन धर्म के तीन तीर्थंकर यहीं पर पैदा हुए। साम्प्रदायिकता व जातिवाद के खिलाफ संत कबीर, संत रैदास व सेन नाई की जन्मस्थली तथा कर्मस्

थली यही रही है। वही दूसरी तरफ बनारस की बनारसी रेशमी साड़ी को मौलाना अल्वी साहब ले आये। समन्वयवाद के तुलसीदास, हिन्दी व उर्दू के महान कथाकार मुंशी प्रेमचन्द, महान साहित्यकार भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र, जयशंकर प्रसाद, डा0 श्याम सुन्दरदास एवं आचार्य रामचन्द्र शुक्ल और बनारस घराने के प्रसिद्ध संगीतकारों की जन्मभूमि व कर्मभूमि यही रही है। वाराणसी से चार भारत रत्न महान शहनाई वादक उस्ताद बिस्मिल्लाह खाँ, देश के दूसरे प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री जी, महान सितार वादक प0 रविशंकर और स्वतंत्रता संग्राम, ऐनी बेसेन्ट व हिन्दुस्तानी कल्चरल सोसाइटी से जुड़े तथा महात्मा गांधी के साथ काशी विद्यापीठ की स्थापना करने वाले डा0 भगवान दास का जुड़ाव यहीं से रहा है। बनारस घराना के संगीतज्ञ जहाँ एक तरफ हिन्दू देवी-देवताओं की स्तुति पर अपना शास्त्रीय संगीत प्रस्तुत करते हैं। वही अफगानिस्तान से आये सरोद, ईरान से आये शहनाई व सितार का गौरव के साथ उपयोग करते है। भारतीय दर्शन की विभिन्न शाखाओं के साथ हिन्दू, इस्लाम, ईसाई, यहूदी, बहाई, बौद्ध, जैन, सिख, सूफी सभी का बनारस से जुड़ाव रहा है। जो बनारस को बहुलतावाद व समावेशवाद का केन्द्र बनाता है और यह केन्द्र ‘गंगा तटीय सभ्यता का हेरिटेज’ है। जिससे भारत ही नहीं, पूरी दुनिया के लोग सीख सकते है कि अपने अन्तर्विरोधों के साथ सहिष्णु व फक्कड़ तरीके से कैसे रहा जा सकता है। इसलिए जरुरी हो गया है कि ‘आस्था, विश्वास व तर्क के शहर’ बनारस को ‘हेरिटेज शहर’ घोषित किया जाये। उसे ‘गन्दा जल’ नहीं, ‘गंगा जल’ मुहैया कराया जाये और भगवान शिव के प्रिय साड़ को बनारस शहर में पीने का पानी और पशुचिकित्सक भी मुहैया कराया जाये। सिंगापुर की तर्ज पर पुराने शहर को हेरिटेज के तौर पर संजोया जाय और नये शहर को आधुनिक दुनिया की तरह बसाया जाय। वही शहर के बिनकारी, खिलौने के काम, जरदोजी को प्रोत्साहित व संरक्षित किया जाय। विदित है कि दुनिया के विभिन्न सेनाओं व पुलिस के बैज भी बनारस से बनते है। हिन्दू देवी-देवताओं के वस्त्र बनारस के मुस्लिम बुनकर बनाते हैं। बनारस के बहुलतावाद और समावेशी इतिहास को कम से कम बनारस के स्कूलों में जरुर पढ़ाया जाय। ये इसलिये जरुरी है कि केवल बनारस में ही नहीं, बल्कि भारत व दक्षिण एशिया में जातिवाद व साम्प्रदायिक सोच को खत्मकर इंसानों के बीच सकारात्मक एकता (Positive Conflict Resolution) स्थापित किया जा सके, जो नागरिक बनाने की प्रक्रिया को मजबूत कर सके। जिससे जातिवाद व सम्प्रदायवाद से होने वाली यातना व संगठित हिंसा को समाप्त किया जा सके। इसी परिपेक्ष्य में बनारस के मूलगादी कबीरचैरा मठ में 09 अगस्त, 2014 (शनिवार) को ‘बनारस सम्मेलन’ कार्यक्रम का आयोजन 11:00 बजे सुबह से शुरु होगा। कार्यक्रम की शुरुआत पं0 विकास महाराज (प्रसिद्ध सरोदवादक) व पं0 प्रभाष महाराज (तबलावादक) के नेतृत्व में ‘पंचनाद’ से शुरु होगा। जिसमें आप सादर आमंत्रित है।

India’s future depends not only on economic growth and state power, but also on the moral credibility of its democratic institutions. Among them, policing remains one of the most visible tests of democracy itself.

In my latest essay, I reflect on the urgent need for humane, accountable, and community-centered policing rooted in constitutional values, dignity, public trust, and social responsibility. Drawing from experiences in Uttar Pradesh, including grassroots initiatives associated with Shri Aniruddh Singh, the article explores how policing can move beyond fear and coercion toward participation, empathy, and democratic legitimacy.

This is not a debate about personalities. It is a larger conversation about justice, public ethics, democratic reform, and the kind of India we want to build.

I am pleased to share with you our recently published book, “Kashi”, co-authored with Chandra Mishra and Shruti Nagvanshi. This work is an effort to understand Kashi not merely as a city, but as a living civilization—rooted in spirituality, plurality, struggle, and human dignity.

Kashi is not just about its ghats, temples, or rituals. It is a confluence of diverse traditions—Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Islamic—shaped by saints, artisans, weavers, widows, Dalits, and countless invisible communities who sustain its spirit every day.

Kashi is not just a city—it is the living heartbeat of India’s civilizational soul.

For centuries, it has been a space where diverse traditions—Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Islamic—have coexisted, interacted, and enriched each other. It is the land shaped by voices like Kabir, Ravidas, Premchand, and Bismillah Khan—voices that speak of harmony, dignity, and shared humanity.

My book Kashi is an attempt to tell a people’s history of this timeless city—one that goes beyond its sacred image to reveal its layered realities.

Women’s Leadership and Social Transformation: Reflections from International Women’s Day 2026

Human rights defender Lenin Raghuvanshi has published a reflective article highlighting the transformative role of women’s leadership in building a more just and humane society. The piece draws from experiences during International Women’s Day 2026 programmes in Varanasi, including a dialogue organized by Amar Ujala, one of India’s leading Hindi newspapers, under its “My City संवाद” initiative.

The article features the work and leadership of social activist Shruti Nagvanshi, who participated in the Amar Ujala discussion alongside women leaders from education, administration, law enforcement, and social sectors. Their conversation on gender equality and empowerment was also featured in Amar Ujala’s Varanasi edition (8 March 2026).

Protecting the Rights of Migrant Families Working at Brick Kilns in Varanasi

Following concerns raised about migrant women working at brick kilns being denied time to breastfeed their children and lacking access to essential maternal and child health services, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognizance of the issue. An official communication from the District Magistrate’s Office, Varanasi, referencing the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), directed the Chief Medical Officer to investigate the matter.

In response, Dr. Harishchandra Maurya, Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO), Varanasi, coordinated with Janmitra Nyas (JMN) to develop an action plan to address the situation. As an initial step, implementation has begun in Pindra Block.

A coordination meeting between a JMN worker and the Medical Officer In-Charge (MOIC) at PHC Pindra resulted in the preparation of a special action plan covering 23 brick kilns in the block. Key measures include conducting surveys of migrant families, developing vaccination micro-plans for children and pregnant women, strengthening Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs), and improving coordination between the health department, local administration, and civil society organizations.

JMN representatives have also been invited to participate in the upcoming Weekly Progress Review (WPR) meeting to ensure effective monitoring and implementation.

This collaborative initiative aims to ensure that migrant workers and their families—especially women and children—receive essential health services, nutrition support, and protection of their rights.

🌟 बधाई हो श्रुति नागवंशी! 🌟

बनारस की बेटी श्रुति नागवंशी एक सच्ची नारी शक्ति की मिसाल हैं। उन्होंने अपनी ज़िंदगी लगभग 30 वर्षों से बाल श्रम, बाल विवाह और महिलाओं के खिलाफ होने वाले उत्पीड़न के खिलाफ संघर्ष करने में समर्पित कर दी है।

छोटी उम्र से ही उन्होंने समाज के सबसे वंचित दलित महिलाओं और बच्चियों के साथ काम किया, उन्हें सरकारी योजनाओं से जोड़ने, अस्पताल सुविधाएँ दिलाने और उनके अधिकारों के लिए आवाज़ उठाने में सहायता की। श्रुति ने लगभग 15 बाल विवाह को होने से रोका, कई बच्चियों को समय से पहले शादी के अँधेरे से बाहर निकाला और उनके जीवन को नई दिशा दी।

अपने पति के साथ मिलकर उन्होंने PVCHR की शुरुआत की। इसी कार्य के लिए उन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मान्यता मिली और 2016 में भारत के महिला एवं बाल विकास मंत्रालय द्वारा टॉप 100 महिला अचीवर्स में शामिल किया गया।

हम श्रुति के साहस, सेवा, और समर्पण को सलाम करते हैं! 💐

और उन सभी महिलाओं के लिए भी जो अपने समुदाय के लिए बदलाव लाने की दिशा में मेहनत कर रही हैं।

Shruti Nagvanshi from Banaras is a true example of women’s strength. For over 30 years, she has dedicated her life to fighting against child labor, child marriage, and violence towards women.

From a young age, Shruti worked alongside marginalized Dalit women and girls — helping them access government schemes, healthcare facilities and boldly raising her voice for their rights. She has prevented around 15 child marriages, saving young girls from being forced into adulthood too soon, and has given them a new lease on life.

Together with her husband, Shruti founded the PVCHR and her work has been recognized internationally. In 2016, she was honored among the Top 100 Women Achievers by India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development.

We salute her courage, dedication, and lifetime of service! 💐
