A Step Toward Justice in a Custodial Death Case

We sincerely appreciate the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India for reaffirming its recommendation directing the Government of Bihar to pay ₹7,50,000 (INR) (approximately US$8,700) as compensation to the family of Ashok Majhi, who died in a custodial death case. The Commission has also directed the State Government to ensure payment within six weeks and submit proof of compliance, while seeking the status of disciplinary action against the erring police officer. This reflects the NHRC's continuing role in protecting the right to life and dignity and ensuring accountability in cases of alleged human rights violations.

Compensation cannot replace a life, but it acknowledges the suffering of the victim's family and reinforces the principle that custodial deaths require accountability, transparency, and justice. We hope the Government of Bihar implements the Commission's directions promptly and that appropriate action is taken against those responsible.

Side by side, Shruti Nagvanshi and Lenin Raghuvanshi stand as co-founders and lifelong companions in the struggle for justice—showing that movements endure not through power, but through trust, solidarity, and moral courage.

In an age of climate crisis and shrinking civic spaces, Lakhania Dari became a living lesson:

There can be no development without dignity.
There can be no democracy without justice.
